I've just published a post on my blog covering the latest addition to my 1620s Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth army – a unit of Polish cossack cavalry. Tried out a new technique that involved nail art decals. 28mm mostly TAG with a few Foundry and Warlord. More pictures, with some historical background and how I created the unit, here – link

In a similar vein, I got from a charity shop a bag of second hand paper shapes (stars, squares, circles, flowers, triangles etc) that were probably intended for crafting or scrapbooks. These paper shapes are great to stick on shields or flags for heraldry and are much easier than painting them freehand. I guess they could be soaked and curved into place on horse clothing. DB |

Excellent painting and I love what you did with the nail art. You must have infinite patience looking through all the nail art designs on Amazon. I spent about 20 minutes combing through the thousands of options and could not find anything I liked. A quick question on the flag. I think I bought the same flag sheet that you have. I found a similar flag in the Osprey Men at Arms Polish Armies 1569-1696 volume 1. It is on plate H and is flag 1. It is very similar, but not identical and is reported to be a ceremonial flag of the General Levy of the Nobility. I therefore decided to use it on the command base of the Nobel Levy. I wondered if you had any information on that flag and why you chose it for this unit. Must admit, on some of my Polish units I don't have a lot of information on flags and have sometimes used flags just because they look right. The other comment that I have that may be useful for you if you make more units of the Polish Cossack. The Pancerni figures from TAG do fit on the horses of Polish Cossacks from TAG. This means that you can have Pancerni figures on horses without the cloth covers. When I asked Pete at the Assault Group, he was more than happy to sell me packs of Pancerni riders with Polish Cossack horses, so that I didn't have wasted horses. In this way my Pancerni units had the more formal horses, but the armored figures in the Polish Cossacks had just standard horses. Of course if you go this route you wouldn't be able to use so much of your impressive nail art!! |

Many thanks, all, for your kind comments! 👍 @ Martin K – I must admit I used that particular planner as it felt not quiet grand enough for the hussars and a bit grander than the regular cossack banners. As you say, flag info. is very limited. Good to know about the horse swaps. |

Problem with Polish and Lithuanian flags from the 17th century is that almost all that survived are in Sweden, majority of them in rather poor shape, plus we rarely know to which unit they belonged to. For years I gather information about such flags, trying to identify them and searching through Polish written sources to get even more info. You can find my collection here: link |

That's a fabulous collection, Michał 👍 So often we know more about flags captured. Thinking about The Scottish flags captured at Preston and Dunbar which means we have some great info for the Scots at those battles, but not so much for the English 😀 |

Problem with flags in Polish sources is the same as with description of Polish tactics: as authors of diaries, letters and official relations knew all about it, they just didn't bother to go into any details, as for them if hussars, pancerni or haiduks attacks, they just knew how they were doing it :) So things like details of the flags are usually ignored as not relevant. That's why relation of foreigners visiting Poland are so useful, as they tend to write much more detailed description, as everything was new to them :) That being said, if one dig into hundreds or even thousands of documents from period, from time to time can find wee note about this flag or another. Few of such description are added into album I posted but they're on in Polish. So if any of you are interested in specific period, let me know, I may be able to find something more specific. |
