Urban terrain that is. Close to a battle in Saxony 1813 but if you want to see genuine (they claim undamaged) city scapes of the last 400 years, the Hotel Duroc had a fabulous page of photographs… link if page doesn't show pics, use Menu at top right- Görlitz/ Environment to get there. Only a few select pictures show on the page; go through the slideshow to see all of the excellent period architectures and styles. If you want more info from the campaign… link regards d

Gorlitz is one of the most beautiful Cities of Germany. It was far enough to the east to not be bombed by british and american bombers and far enough to the south to not be in the path of the last attack of the Red Army at Berlin. It has a big late medieval innercity and a wonderful late 19th century suburb. If you are in germany i highly recommend visiting the city. Problem is, it is in a far away corner of germany. |

So pleased you are happy Fred. Decebalus- thanks, but remember, it is but a small step from whereever I am in Europe, when you consider I am starting on the other side of the planet! Yes I too am willing to travel there. It is almost directly North of Wien; Brno to some extent, and a wilderness between so I don't have any hesitation booking in a future holiday there. I loved the historical parts and scenery of Wien, Innbsruck, Ratstadt etc. when I last toured there. regards davew |

Hi My daighter worked and lived in Gorlitz for 6 months and I was lucky enough to visit. Its a beautiful town. Contains a number of medieval fortifications as well as lovely squares, buildings and cafes. Well placed for visits to Dresden and Bautzen on the local, very reliable train. Dresden is full of museums and sites for the wargamer. You can walk over the bridge near the main church and your in Poland (the former Eastern suburns of Gorlitz). You can get over to Breslau/Wroclaw fairly easily. I got there by the train from Berlin without any difficulties. |

Thanks for the report JTR. There are just so many places, let's just say all over, Europe that have their own attraction; and like certain country parts of the US, far more attractive than the 'mainstream' hangouts. Like Niagra, walked across the bridge and was surprised at the better view from the Cannucks side of the stream ;-] … d |

Yes indeed, in Berlin we tell "Görlitz" also "Görliwood" as many movies were filmed in the completely preserved city with several architecture styles ranging from the 16th/17th to end of 19th century. Unfortunately the belle époque style department store is still closed, some of you may know it from the movie "Grand Budapest Hotel" (it is the hotel). But in case you want to visit the town make a stop at Dresden (one hour of train or car away) where you may not only visit the reconstructed old city but also the official German military history museum (cf. mhmbw.de). Greetings from Berlin Markus Stein |

Fabulous! A most unique movie and wonderful setting. I enjoyed it immensely in theatre, or was it the fabulous company I was with?; and have done so several more times on TV! Thanks so much your comments Markus; really nice to get some 'local' views of these matters. regards dave |
