Just painted up some Ethiopian and Somali jets. These are the F-5As; the F-5E Tiger IIs will be camouflaged so I can distinguish them on the table. More on the blog, here: link

Very sharp, everything is right – the canopies, decals, glow inside the engines. Whose models are those and what rules will you use? |

Nick, outstanding work. Your previous paint jobs were nice but these are on another level. Really sharp looking. I plan to game the Ogaden War air battles at some point… Andrew, these appear to be from Tumbling Dice's awesome 1/600 scale Vapour Trails range. |

Thanks for the kind words gentlemen! Yes; they are from Tumbling Dice's 1/600 range and they are really nice miniatures to paint – they have to be: I did a count up and I have 73 to paint for my Suez 1956 project! I use the 'Wings at War' series for gaming, which is a lovely simple system that models energy really well. They're all conflict-specific but 'Wings at War: Thud Ridge', which is a Vietnam set, serves as a good proxy for other eras from the late '60s all the way through the mid '80s. I'll be using these for the Ogaden, having used them for the Arab-Israeli wars 1967-1973 and the Agacher Strip War of 1986. |

Those look super cool, though I must admit I'm not familiar with the Ogaden War, need to read up on that. I have 'Thud Ridge' as well and it looks really nice, just haven't made time to get it on the table yet… V/R, Jack |

Cheers Jack The Ogaden War is well worth a look as there was a lot of air combat. The Ethiopians did the full fighter school in the US (most often outperforming white 'western' nations) so they were a more than a match for the Somalis' numerical superiority. Ethiopia flew F-5A/Bs, F-5Es, Canberras, Sabres. Somalia had MiG-17s, 21s, Il-28s, so Thud Ridge should be pretty easy to adapt. There's a good book in the Helion 'Africa at War' series: link Loads of colour plates and details of ORBATs and actions. All the best, Nick |

Excellent information, and thanks for the book recommendation. I'll add it to the list! V/R, Jack |

When I lived in Somalia, there was an Ethiopian Canberra bomber at Kismayo airport, the pilot defected during the Ogaden war. Wish I had taken some pics now. |

Cool stuff, and that must have been an adventure in and of itself! V/R, Jack |
