Indeed they certainly fitted a lot sometimes, got a pic somewhere of a Churchill sporting Panther tracks as additional armour!

got a pic somewhere of a Churchill sporting Panther tracks as additional armour

Considering the thickness of Churchill armour, I am left wondering if throwing a couple of Panther tracks on top would have any practical (rather than psychological) defensive benefit.

The extra armour was always a matter of contention but given the widespread use of the panzerfaust in theory the track links wouild denonate the warhead before it made contact with the main armour thereby lessening any penetration. I've read it worked and equally read that it didnt, think yoiu've got it right Griefbringer, more of a psychological thng, 'we are stuck out here dodging panzerfausts so we gotta try ANYTHING to make things better'.
Wouldnt be the first time 'wishful thinking' trumped practcality.

Thinking again, I am wondering how they obtained those Panther tracks in the first place… if they were from a tank that they managed to bag themselves, then it would make for a grand trophy / souvenir.

Then again, they might have just happened to encounter an abandoned German supply truck full of spare tank parts.

Almost all of the hundreds of the Panthers committed to Normandy were lost there, so plenty of wrecks to get track links off.

Great work – thanks for sharing!

Great work!

Sometimes the additional stuff fastened onto the tank actually made the situation worse, as the added standoff distance *improved* the performance of the primitive HEAT warhead.
