Do you trust the main stream media news? Simple "yes" or "no". Please don't name any specific media companies; we all know who the main steam / mass media is. |
Col Durnford | 21 May 2021 3:24 p.m. PST |
I trust our news readers about as far as I can spit a rat. |
Gear Pilot | 21 May 2021 3:24 p.m. PST |
I guess I have to say "No" because most of them don't just report the news, but also try to influence what I think about what they report to a greater or lesser degree. I prefer to form my own opinions. |

Making it binary seems less than useful. Does anyone trust anything 100%? |
John the OFM | 21 May 2021 3:43 p.m. PST |
For years I watched the lies on FOX exclusively. Then I switched to the lies on CNN. I'll let you guess what made me switch. All lie, but some lies are more palatable. |

I have to agree that making it binary isn't very useful at all. If you are discussing The Cable 24/7 Drama Infotainment Noise which is designed to fill airtime between ads for drugs we never knew we needed the answer would be generally not really with the proviso that Fox and OANN don't even qualify as anything more than propaganda machines. If you are discussing the major broadcast networks the answer would be perhaps marginally. If you are discussing PBS or NPR the answer would be Yes. I choose to get my news from BBC, NHK, DW and France 24 along with Al Jazeera and the aforementioned PBS/NPR along with watching C-Span. |
USAFpilot | 21 May 2021 3:56 p.m. PST |
I'm not asking if you trust it 100%. Even objective, unbiased, truthful, professional journalism is capable of making mistakes. I'm asking, are you getting the unbiased and whole truth reporting? |
John the OFM | 21 May 2021 3:57 p.m. PST |
Are you kidding? Each network has its own agenda. You just have to choose the agenda you agree with. |
USAFpilot | 21 May 2021 4:00 p.m. PST |
CNN and MSNBC don't even qualify as anything more than propaganda machines. If you are discussing the FOX the answer would be perhaps marginally. If you are discussing OAN and Newsmax the answer would be Yes. Fixed it for you. Ps. I said don't name specific media companies. |

With the notable exception of American political coverage I mostly trust the news…sometimes. |
USAFpilot | 21 May 2021 4:03 p.m. PST |
Each network has its own agenda. Was it always like this? I remember as a kid that the news seemed pretty middle of the road, and it was about reporting an event with just the facts, not all the opinion you hear now. |

Go back to the Jefferson/Hamilton, the Hamilton/Burr, the ….. The Press has NEVER been unbiased. Deal with it. Look up Walter Cronkite. See how unbiased he was. USAFPilot, you have colossal nerve to demand at the beginning that we not consider specific outlets, and then you "fixed it for you" to praise lunatic outlets. It shows YOUR bias, more than anything. |

Selectively would be my answer to the OP. I think one needs to be sensible and discriminating with choosing your information inflows. I'm definitely with McWong73 – I laugh at people who claim they read their news on Facebook. And I trust no source with which the Murdoch's have any involvement. As a family they couldn't lie straight in bed!! Ha! A pox on their house. |
Prince Alberts Revenge | 21 May 2021 5:29 p.m. PST |
The short answer is no. They all have agenda and a bias. Some use subtle nuance to frame their position while others much more inflammatory and bombastic. Anymore, I'm not sure which approach is more dangerous. I feel that all of them aim to inflame passions and encourage division because that's what keeps viewers tuned in. They all preach to their choirs. |

Fitzovich "I'm sorry your little fix shows your complete bias and lack of any objectivity." I'm sorry but your comment shows complete bias in favor of discredited news sources. I find that when I get my information from multiple sources I achieve a more balanced viewpoint. |

"Do you trust the news media?" Just the local weather reports (most of the time…) And the latest "They found an alligator where?" stories… ;-) |
doc mcb | 21 May 2021 8:50 p.m. PST |
A number of factors operating over the past several decades are steadily draining the legitimacy and therefore the trust of almost all institutions and professions, with journalism high on the list of those hardest hit. I try to read from sources opposing my own views, as well as from those that confirm them, but there are few if any thta are truly neutral or objective. Sites like Realclearpolitics that aggregate stories and often pair opposing pieces on the same topics are ery useful. But in general, no, I do not trust the media. |
John the OFM | 21 May 2021 9:12 p.m. PST |
Let me just say that everybody who is sad enough to have contributed to this thread has shown their own biases. Mine are disillusioned and cynical. They all lie. It's delusional to think that any source is non-biased. But if they agree with you, they're wonderful. Grow up. |

What has this to do with wargaming or toy soldiers? It is a highly charged topic capable of raising strong feelings and is a thinly veiled political discussion. Another example of Bill's inconsistent editorial policy. |

pvernon | 21 May 2021 10:39 p.m. PST |
NO!! I had a friend that would listen to a far right commentator on FOX and then turn to Radio Pacifica, about as far left as you can get, then figure that the truth was somewhere in between. 10 years ago a person active in political thought would read 4 to 6 different news papers to get an objective view, that is gone. So sad!! The closest to a middle of the road commentator of USA politics would seem to be the BBC. |
Grelber | 21 May 2021 11:29 p.m. PST |
Got to agree with Alcibiades. However, I sometimes used to read the English language electronic version of a newspaper out of Peshawar that was a great source of ideas for Colonial games. "Hindu girl kidnapped by Pathans" What more excuse do we need to send an expedition to get her back and keep the Frontier peaceful? Grelber |
