Found an interesting item about a project to restore Gance's 1927 epic film on Napoleon. I saw the 3 hour version when it was last released in 1981, but a seven-hour version sounds to be even more intriguing. From the RFI website: link |

Agree, I have seen a big portion once on TCM, I would go to a theater to see it. |

The British Film Institute produced a five and a half hour version on Blu-ray about 5 years ago? |

I went to see the 3-hour version backi 1981, in West Chester, PA, and at the end when the 3-screen blue blanc et rouge tricolor appeared, fully half the audience stood up and sang the Marseillais or whatever. But the other guy had fallen asleep, so I sang alone! GdeP |

"But the other guy had fallen asleep, so I sang alone!" That has made my day! |

Doesn't bode well for the seven hour version? |

Pre-covid, I saw the 5hour release at our silent film club. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but it only went up to 1796, it left me wanting to see the remainder of Nap's life story. Alas, Gance had used up all of his budget. Chagrin. |

I was trying to recall whether I saw the film at the university or at a theatre so I asked my wife if she remembered anything about it. After explaining that I was talking about a three-hour movie about Napoleon I got "the look" and was asked in turn, "What in the world made you think I was there?" |
