A scenario based on the Battle of Dogger Bank (January 23, 1915):

Hi NCC1717,
Very interesting, indeed. I was a bit confused by the maneuvering of 1AG (i.e. – Hipper surrendering his line of retreat), but my discovery that 1AG was robot-controlled helped (I think) to explain it – I'm assuming that maintenance of a secure line of retreat was not included in the German algorithm.

More, please.

Blutarski,

You are correct. The 'retreat' algorithms are very limited and don't have much strategic sense.

This is not much of a concern to me, since the purpose of the code is to support a miniatures battle. I don't like the idea of setting up a large game, only to have players decide to retreat.

Generally when I write operational orders for the players I make it clear they are expected to fight. Maybe something about a '300 year tradition', or the need for one, or with 'your shield or on it', or dropping the handkerchief.

'your shield or on it'

That resonates with me, NCC1717. My mother's parents came from the region of the Peloponnesus where Sparta is located.
