I am very new to this era – can anyone point me to the best providers? The only plastic ones I can find are from Warlord Games, and of the lead variety I normally opt for Perry's in other periods. Thanks in advance. |

Don't forget Old Glory for filling out the rank and file. There were very few actual Samurai in samurai armies. |

Did you have a particular era in mind Genpei War, Mongol invasions or Sengoku Jidai? It will make a difference to what miniatures you pick. |

The Assault Group has some great metal samuri. I have a couple hundred of them. |

Sorry, should have specified the era of the battle of Sekigahara. Rank and file, yes indeed, was using the term Samurai generically – will take a look at Old Glory. |

Currently on the painting table. I have my first Samurai army (Old RalPartha in true 25mm) the first army is in red and their opponent army will be in black. There are quite a few other elements pending, including an artillery unit, Noumin (farmers), some ronin, as well as some fantasy figures. The first army is a little Samurai heavy with the following units:
Seated and foot commander. Commend element 6 figures. Mounted Samurai 6 mounted (with 6 dismounted). Foot Samurai 18 – 6 each sword, yuri (polearm), Yumi (bow). Ashigaru Yuri 12. Ashigaru Yumi 12. Ashigaru teppo (firearm) 12. |

I'm almost done with a Samurai and a Korean army. Using Perry's figs for both. Both armies are beautifully sculpted. |

Wise words, Durnford. Do you think anyone will heed them? |

Kingsford and another, AW? They turn up with a search on eBay. I'm partial to Perry myself. |

Dixon 25s may not mix well with some of these other lines. Just my 2 cents worth. Take a look at this comparison image link Sadly, Dixon is not shown. But you can read about them (and others) here link |

I did a size comparison a while back. Left to right Wargames Factory (Warlord) plastic, Northstar (Ronin), Steel fist, Perry and Valiant (Legend of the 5 rings)
The Warlord plastics are fine miniatures, but they don't have the "heroic" proportions that most modern miniatures have Steel fist are superb miniatures, but more expensive than the Perry. I generally consider Perry to be the gold standard, and the Samurai range is one of their best. These are all Sengoku period. The Valiant range is mostly fantasy (Western fantasy of Japan) but has a few outstanding figures, with older style armor My personal opinion – Samurai are very very time consuming to paint. Buy a couple first and test paint to see if this is what you really want to do. I have a big box of unpainted figures that hasn't been opened for a few years. But then again, there's no rule saying that you have to paint all the details John |

There are quite a few makers of 28mm Samurai. How many will be right for what you are looking for, I'm not sure. But plenty of options to browse… link |

Thanks to all of you. I've actually bought two sets, cavalry and missile troops, going cheap from Warlord, to give myself a start; and the kind advice and links will help me to go on from that. |
