Hello everyone,

For the Wars of the Roses, the factories offer a lot of Billmen, Halberdiers and Longbowmen figurines but without a livery coat?

What are they for ?

Thank you.

MajorB06 May 2021 6:10 a.m. PST

Not everyone wore a livery coat.

Ah for the nobles ok, but for the others, the commoners, unless they are mercenaries or continental allies, they shouldn't wear livery coats?

You only wear a livery coat if you are indentured to the lord whose livery it is. This is the principle of Bastard Feudalism also known as "livery and maintenance". And even then not every indentured man will wear a livery coat.

I think the answer to your original question is that once you paint them you can use them for whichever side you want!

You could also just put the unit leader of the commoners in a livery coat to 'represent' the entire unit. You could even make several different unit leaders to swap & give you more flexibility… ;-)

Thank you all,

English and Welsh commoners without livery coats don't interest me …

What I like most is the masses of retinues with their lords' personal standards and banners, their livery banners, the livery coats with their shimmering colors and all their badges of their longbowmen and their billmen and also the brave Bretons, French, Burgundians, Flemings, Germans, Scots and Irish with their often different outfits and weapons.

What about all the English and Welsh commoners who were members of a retinue but happened to not wear a livery coat?

If the question being asked is "what is the point in the models WOTR ranges that don't wear livery coats" the answer is simply "it is unlikely that everyone would have worn a livery coat".

If the follow-up question is "what portion of men in a retinue would have worn a livery coat?" the answer is most likely "we don't know", and you can interpret it how you want. You can have them all in livery coats, of 50/50, or whatever you want. Personally I prefer my late medieval soldiers to not look too smart and uniform, so I'd go closer to the 50/50 approach, but that's just me.

MajorB, for me at Bosworth which is a special battle, there should not have been many commoners without livery coats among the English and Welsh commoners, the shire levy and town contingents not even having time to arrive, this battle must have been certainly delivered only by houselolde troops and brave continental mercenaries and scottish, so i don't want miniatures for english and welsh commoners without livery coats which besides are not very shimmering.

Well answered Charlie, me, apart from the M.A.A. and the mercenaries or the foreign allies, I want everything all the English and Welsh commoners in livery coats.

How do you know that? As I and others have said, we do not know if all the members of a retinue wore a livery coat. And what makes Bosworth "special" or indeed any different from any other WOTR battle?

I think you've answered your own question. You want all your soldiers in livery coats. Then go for it!

Then there were badges and improvised badges.

MajorB is not the subject of this topic, but for me this battle is special because the campaign only lasted 15 days, it's very short …

Henri Tudor leaves Harfleur on August 1st and arrives in Mill Bay, north of Milford Haven, on August 7th.

The battle took place on August 22, 1485 so the case was settled in exactly 15 days, various contingents – such as the shire levy and town contingents – therefore certainly did not have time to arrive …

Yes Charlie that's exactly what I'm going to do for the reason explained above to MajorB …

Thank you all

Most campaigns in the WOTR were short …

I don't know, but in most of the armies of the WOTR battles there were Shire Levy and Town contingents.
