Please, Which manufacture offers "schutzenfähnlein" pennants of handgunners of the Swiss army during the Burgundian wars for 28mm miniatures? Thank you. |

Sorry, I am blank on this. Perhaps you could try to get some motives and make color copies. |

Paskal, I created one for you and posted to my old blog site kerikerigamer.blogspot.com It's a little rough, but you can always add a bit of paint to it if you wish to use it Ian |

Thank you Druzhina, "your photos of the time" are always useful … Thank you very much Ian the Sandinista, I have the "schutzenfähnlein" pennants for the crossbowmen of the cantons of Appenzell, Bern, Zug, Basel -Lanschaft, Friborg, Nidwalden, Basel -Stadt Lucerne, Schwyz, Solothurn, Uri Glarus Obwalden, Schaffausen and Zurich. For the arquebusiers I only have those of Nidwalden, Schwyz and Glarus. The one you gave us is that of Zurich in 1512 with a crossbow on one side and an arquebus on the other … Perhaps in 1512, the schutzenfähnlein had mixed crossbowmen and arquebusiers but this was certainly not the case in 1476-1477 … |

The Burgundian army was already on par with crossbows and arquebus, and the Reichsheer of 1474 already had more gunners then arquebusiers – actually the first Swiss campaign leading to the battle of Heringcourt was part of that war, with the Swiss acting as part of the Imperial distraction effort against Charles. So I am not exactly sure when the banners took up the arquebus, but "certainly not" for 1476 seems wrong. |

Puster, There were arquebusiers (or hand gunners if you prefer …) in the Swiss contingents of the Burgundian wars but they were not mixed with the crossbowmen. There were crossbow schutzenfähnlein and arquebusier schutzenfähnlein (or hand gunners if you prefer …) pikeman666,that's what I do… |

Swiss arquebusiers with a banner with crossbow must have been drawn after 1477 Yes, but Schilling is not just portraying things in the exact year that it was painted. It also shows that the type of missile weapon portrayed on a flag does not necessarily indicate the type of missile weapon used by the unit carrying it. A flag with a crossbow on one side and an arquebus on the other could have been a multipurpose flag. What dates were your "schutzenfähnlein" pennants for the crossbowmen of the cantons of Appenzell, Bern, Zug, Basel -Lanschaft, Friborg, Nidwalden, Basel -Stadt Lucerne, Schwyz, Solothurn, Uri Glarus Obwalden, Schaffausen and Zurich drawn? My "schutzenfähnlein" pennants for the crossbowmen of the cantons of Appenzell, Bern, Zug, Basel -Lanschaft, Friborg, Nidwalden, Basel -Stadt Lucerne, Schwyz, Solothurn, Uri Glarus Obwalden, Schaffausen and Zurich are from 1476 -1477. A "schutzenfähnlein" pennant with a crossbow on one side and an arquebus on the other could have been a multipurpose flag for "schutzenfähnlein" mixing crossbowmen and arquebusiers, but this type of unit only appeared after 1477, you can check. |

I Had this in mind with the idea that it was from the Burgundian war, but you are right, its later:
Dijonerzug of 1513, from the Flaggenbuch. |
