I'm looking for rulesets for gaming Great Italian War. 1) big battles, in 10mm or 15mm,max table size 6x4. Preferably with different levels of play, starting with low count of bases to massive battles fir dozens of bases. 2) true skirmish, rpgish, around max ten minis per side. |

There was a free set of rules in Battle Magazine (issue 7) called Sans Peur et Sans Reproche that used hexes and not a lot of units and handled combat slightly differently to the mainstream to bring out the idiosyncrasies of the period. The magazine is still available from: link |

I use a number of rule sets. However, I do like putting on larger games with 6-8 people. Often the majority of the people that join in are not familiar with the rules. For this type of situation where you just want people to join in and have fun, I find that Pike and Shotte (Warlord Games) works very well. It gives a fast moving, fun game. I also gives historically acceptable results. Of course I have a number of house rules that I use with Pike and Shotte. The main ones are: - How to handle very large pike blocks (most pike blocks are 24 or 36 figures, but I do go up to 196 figure pike blocks). - How cavalry can be used to attack pike blocks – the base rules just don't handle this well. - Allowing a player to move at least one unit a turn, even if they fail their first command role (avoids players not being able to do anything for multiple turns if they roll badly). You can find some other custom rules at my blog: collegeofkings.com |

1) Impetus works quite well for the period. 2) Maybe Pikeman's Lament or En Garde |

Another vote to Impetus. Designed by an Italian company with the Italian wars in mind (though usefull for others, too). Its not a simulation but a fun game. |

No game is a simulation. You can also try the P&S extensions for DBA to satisfy the skirmish itch. Each game has 12 elements per side and plays on a 2x2 board in 15mm. Steve |

The rules set Furioso available from Alternative Armies is designed specifically for the Italian Wars. However, I have not played it. I use To the Strongest for everything since I like simple rules that I can learn to play well rather than a hundred rules where I don't known what to do without constantly consulting the rule book. |

@Dukewilliam True, but some are more inclined to emulate a "realistic" behaviour, putting the focus on units or command on different levels. I have tons of those. And then there are games that dwell in simplification (one page rules, and so…). I sometimes play these. Impetus is one of those that hits MY sweet spot between, abstracting especially the battle performance but also the command control in a way that is fun to play and produces overall believable results, while using mechanics that cannot be all traced back to actual battlefield statistics and procedurs. The best think is that impetus uses large bases, which can be formed by putting four DBA/FOG-style bases together, or by creating mini dioramas. I like that, even when I usually base my minis individually. |

Field of Glory Renaissance and DBR would both work (and use the same basing) |

I've been writing an extension for TtS! into the Renaissance, it's a fascinating period. It's taken a very long time but I'm beginning to see daylight. (most pike blocks are 24 or 36 figures, but I do go up to 196 figure pike blocks) A man after my own heart! ;-) |

We have been using Pike and Shotte for years for the period. It works great!!! Try it. We play in 28mm and have played everything from small pick up games to massive 12 player demos at conventions. It does play very well for 15mm too as long as the unit frontages are all the same. |

Does anyone know where to find the Warmaster modifications for the renaissance? Reading this makes me think that might be a fun game as I always liked that system and thought it a little more fun than DBR. I remember a site with lots of Warmaster period spinoffs but can't find it anymore. I thought the renaissance one was there. |

Another voice for Pike and Shotte, I play in 15mm and 10mm. The game works well, both for small actions and huge games |
