Which living celebrity sports figure would you most like to play a miniature wargame with? |
JimDuncanUK | 28 Apr 2021 1:13 p.m. PST |
Absolutely none, let's stick to the military. |
Wackmole9 | 28 Apr 2021 1:25 p.m. PST |

I'd personally like a chance to have some face time with Gina Carano to see if she's as cool as I imagine her to be or the 6 alarm nut job so many nake her out to be. Shouldn't take long… |

Dwayne Johnson – Does he still count as a sports figure? He's an actor now, but he used to be in that synchronized dancing group. I believe he used to play D&D. Wayne Gretzky – Met him once in Norfolk, VA in the early 00's. It was kinda a nostalgia hero moment. He seemed like a nice guy beside being a good sportsman and excellent sport. Driven to win and to be fair. What else do you want in an opponent? DOM – She played four years of club rugby (a hook … just like her old man; well, actually, much better than her old man) While earning a BSEE and a BA in History. She's a celebrity 'round here. Or maybe not want to. She wins often. Jim Tressel, Urban Meyer, and Kirk Herbstreit – Smart, tactical, savvy. Go Bucks! Guo Qi – One of the few International Chess Grandmasters who isn't also a [expletive deleted]. |

First tell me which ones are honest, pleasant to converse with, reasonably skilled wargamers and knowledgeable about the period. You say this has nothing to do with being an athlete? Yes, Bill, kind of my point. |
Eumelus | 28 Apr 2021 4:27 p.m. PST |
You know, George S. Patton competed for the United States in the 1912 Olympics (modern pentathalon)… |
Frederick | 28 Apr 2021 4:53 p.m. PST |
Dwayne Johnson – or Wayne Gretzky if Dwayne was tied up Both seem to have pretty good senses of humour and don't seem too much into themselves |

Seems to be a lot of assuming going on about the nature and personalities of professional athletes. While I don't know any personally, I know of former NFL players who are mathematicians, surgeons, and hold other highly intellectual positions (Byron "Whizzer" White, former NFL star, later became a highly respected Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from 1962-1993 link ). Many professional sports are highly tactical in nature (particularly American football); I would expect many of these athletes to be equally adept at conducting maneuvers with tabletop figures. Former Titan Cornerback Alterraun Verner comes to mind, who holds a dual degree in Mathematics and Applied Science from UCLA (Wikipedia claims a 4.17 GPA and a 1740 SAT score). I'm thinking he'd be a very challenging opponent for any tabletop game. Like others have said, it's the personality that matters the most. As long as somebody likes to have fun, they're welcome to game with me! |

That group of Denver Broncos that was featured in Sports illustrated as summer war gamers. Had a picture of one of them sitting in a tiny back yard kiddie pool painting Napoleonics. They are all probably still alive even though article was late 80's early 90's |

Megan Rapinoe. I would be afraid that even though she would have 2/3 as many figures as I would get she would still kick my <bleep> |

Great article, Frederick! I also viewed the photos— hard core, on the floor! EDIT: Wonder if he's on this site— a search pulled up a 2007 Denver Post article with a photo of him with an array of miniature terrain and plastic figures, though the article was about the lasting effects of sports injuries. (Required a login/email address so no link or details. I don't play that game. But a search for Tom Glassic should pull it up.) |

First tell me which ones are honest, pleasant to converse with, reasonably skilled wargamers and knowledgeable about the period. Tell me which ones aren't. Then I'll look up how many other players there are in whatever league the ones you picked are in. |

Everything is all about them if they are celebrities. Yeah. Plus, what are the odds the glitterati would want to spend time with morbidly obese, old, balding men who don't shower and lack any social skills? |
Escapee | 01 May 2021 9:56 a.m. PST |
Exactly! How about the historical figure you would most like to game with? Many of them did not shower either. I see common ground. |
von Schwartz ver 2 | 01 May 2021 2:37 p.m. PST |
Paige Spiranac No fair!!! I wouldn't be able to tear my eyes off her long enough to play. |
Escapee | 01 May 2021 7:08 p.m. PST |
Also exactly! I am not sure you can even call her a sports figure. She is certainly a figure though and would be impossible to wargame with. I would, however, be willing to give it a try. |

Given that I can no longer run, jump, or even bend over and touch my toes, it would be a short match. Trash talk was a major component of Dwayne Johnson's synchronized dance troupe. I could manage that. |

Why would I want to play a wargame with a sports celebrity, or any celebrity of any kind? |
etotheipi | 07 May 2021 2:36 p.m. PST |
Celebrity – Because they are human beings, like anyone else. Sports Celebrity – They study tactics and strategy. |
