I am looking to increase my library on the 1809 Campaign as I only have the late Gunther Rothenberg's 'The Emperor's Last Victory' and James Arnold's two volumes plus the two Osprey Campaign titles. Would Thunder three volumes be a good purchase? |

Yes, I think it's the best history of the campaign with lots of useful information for wargaming – also the separate book on just the Battle of Znaim is excellent. |

I agree with BillyNM. These are excellent books and well worth the money. |

You won't regret it. Essential reading for the 1809 campaign. Also worth adding is 'With Eagles to Glory'. |

Yep, get all the books, you won't regret it. Do note that there is a second edition of With Eagles to Glory. |

Agreed with all of the above, the 1809 Trilogy, plus Znaim is THE source. |

Good point, do not forget the Znaim book. |

Echo all the above. In addition…I would suggest a copy of "Armies on the Danube, 1809" by Charlie Tarbox and Scott Bowden as well as a copy of "Napoleon's Great Adversary:the Archduke Charles" by Gunther Rothenberg |

Gill's books are excellent. His book "With Eagles To Glory" is also excellent. It is about all the various German states (and maybe others) who were in the French army of 1809 and the parts they played. Dave Jackson's suggestions above are also very good, to add another opinion. |

I echo the comments about Mr. Gill's books. He also did a great podcast episode on his newest book, Battle of Znaim, on the Napoleonist podcast. link |

The Tarbox-Bowden book is also a very good source, as is "WEtG", plus I must also mention Arnold's "Crisis on the Danube" & Napoleon Conquers Austria. As a final aside, Epstein's The Viceroy at War (Eugene Beauharnais)is an excellent study of a up and coming officer who should have become a Marshal of France and might very well have echoed the accomplishments of Davout and St. Cyr. |

Thunder on the Danube is excellent! |

There was a similar discussion a while back. As I recall, several of us agreed that, if you are going to get the Gill books, Armies on the Danube is really only worth getting if you can buy it cheapish. The Arnold books are good, but Gill is better. |

I agree that the Arnold book is good but is much older than Gill and IIRC has some odd bits like Marmont's Army of Dalmatia having a stupendous amount of artillery… |
