My own Austrian Jäger (15mm Old Glory) have a much more basic paint job than the beautifully painted works of art von Winterfeldt has presented to us. I've based mine (the bases need further decoration and tidying up) so they can be in close or extended order. Here they are in close order:
And here, in skirmish order:
Here they are with all the bases they need:
The white is the magnetic surface. At the moment, as I've just started the basing, they're quite firm but I'm going to paint the bottoms of the individual two-figure bases with magnetic (iron rich) paint so they stay in place. Cheers, John |

nice, so the OG minitures have muskets and rifles?? |

Yes, a mixture. About a third armed were armed with rifles, the rest muskets as far as I am aware. |

They are not "less impressive", as you said. The figures are fine and seem to be really well done (OK for not exactly glamorous units) with some nice highlighting. But the photography…. the focusing…the depth of focus…the light balance…the angle of view. Apart from those, the photos are great. Naw seriously. Great figures I suspect. Rotten imaging. Find a digital SLR, not a phone. Set to Av, f about 27, massive lighting, lower angle, tripod or at least hands off, rested on summat and a delayed exposure, about 2 seconds. See them then…. |

I was just going to add, 'refining' the figures with a bit of retouching, like redefining edges, darker contours, change the colour of firearms a bit, add highlighting, all makes a unit a bit different to the eye. And don't forget we're looking top down, so make sure the hatwear is best you can do, good colours for decorations, define edges with a pale wash so they look 'rounded' etc. cheers dave |

Thanks for the kind comments and advice. Yes they were hurriedly shot with my (not very good) phone. My wife has a digital SLR, quite old but I'm sure better than my phone. I bought her a tripod for her birthday a year or so ago so I should have a wee play. Austrian firearms were usually quite dark, almost black. I used Vallejo German Camouflage Black over black for them. Cheers, John |

@SHaT1984 + 1 on importance of hats Try edge highlight on the top edge of the hats and see what you think Your "much more basic paint job" is great. I consider the level at which I paint to be glorious insanity and wouldn't recommend to anyone else. Of course I still aspire to paint like von Winterfeldt … Your basing combining close and open order is really interesting. Not sure whether I would do the same thing, but it's a very cool idea I really like the way you have blended the flocking on the bases and the mat. You seem to have picked exactly the right colour to paint the edges of the bases John |

Nice work, I love the basing ideas too! |
