"A Sydney dance troupe whose performance at the launch of a new $2 USD billion navy ship was panned as inappropriate have blamed coverage by the ABC and other media for making them feel "threatened" and "unsafe", after footage of the routine went viral. The group, known as 101 Doll Squadron, singled out the ABC for what they called "deceptive editing". In a widely circulated ABC video, the troupe are seen performing — and at times, "twerking" — in front of stony-faced dignitaries attending the launch of the HMAS Supply in Woolloomooloo…" YouTube link YouTube link Main page link

If you are going to hire strippers, at least have the good sense to hire really attractive ones. Sorry, no dolls in that squadron. |

What do dancers have to do with a ship launch? Why waste the investment? Save the cash and buy more racks. This is stupid. |

On the plus side…it's nice to see that the degradation of western society isn't confined to the U.S. |
Prince Alberts Revenge | 17 Apr 2021 7:57 p.m. PST |
Meh, I read the article and watched the videos…don't see the uproar and didn't see anything inappropriate. If the crew was present, I'm sure they appreciated it, probably more than a military band playing 200 year old tunes. WW2 bombers had pin-up models painted on the noses in far less revealing outfits and far more risque poses. Western society may be degrading but I'm not sure this is an example. Now if the ship had to adopt non-binary pronouns that may be a different story… |

As Prince Albert suggests, it is a storm in a tea-cup. Some junior officer (who will probably have reached his ceiling rank now) was told to sort out a bit of "Home Port Engagement" (ie have a choir/sports team/school kids or whatever from the local area present) and chose unwisely. The media creatures have blown it well out of proportion and been predictably outraged, the CDF and Gov-Gen (a former CDF and just as politicised) decided they'd be absolutely shocked and weren't there for the act, the pollies tut-tutted and dived for cover, and the woke crowd went feral. SN-AFU. PS- the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC), a taxpayer-funded media service that is supposed to be apolitical, has been caught out splicing the footage to make it appear that the CDF and GG were there, when they weren't. So has another commercial media mob. That should be the main story, not some LT or LTCMDR's lapse of judgement. |

No surprises given the collapse of moral, community and family values on this country. Australian culture is getting increasingly crass. I just caught like 5 minutes of some reality tv show at 7:15 pm (I don't watch TV generally) and they were swearing without bleeping it and the women were dressed on par with strippers. You see these obese and unkempt Aussies walking around swearing their heads off in broad day light. I have seen people punching on twice in broad daylight on the main street of our city. (And no it wasn't like this in the past – there had been the development of a bogan culture much like British chavs and American trailer park trash).
Anywhere up to 50% pf the Australian population is functionally illiterate. link Drug and alcohol use is sky rocketing. Domestic violence is out of control. My state hasn't had much population growth but prisons are overflowing and anpit the only new government facility they are building is an additional prison (schools, ports, railway lines, community hospitals, mental health facilities are being closed down). People don't want to pay taxes and community volunteering is on massive decline.
Oh and no one disciplines their children. All of my daughter's school friends are horrid spoiled entitled brats. Same for my niece and nephew and many of my friend's kids – spoiled entitled brats with no self control. Place has degenerated into debauchery and mindless consumerism. There is no more shame or pride. The closest that comes to intellectial thought is SJW woke self flaggelation. |

One thing for you non-Aussies – this twerking story is parr of a broader issie on Australia of respect from women. Several MPs or staffers including Attorney General are embroiled in sexual harrasment or rape allegations. One government official was even caught masturbating over a female politicians desk. The Prime Minister mishandled it so badly and on such a sexist and patronising mabner even the Murdoch media roasted him over it. So twerking for a naval ship commissioning just gives the media more ammo that the government is infested with sexist pigs. |

I do find a twerking, dance exhibition certainly "interesting" for the launch of a new naval vessel. My, how some naval traditions HAVE changed. Note, I'm not a total prude, and not against twerking in general, but Aussie naval tradition IS certainly a bit different than that for the US Navy. It appears the Aussie's are "leading the way" in this practice. No doubt, others may soon attempt to emulate and outdo this dance troop, which could lead to a very interesting escalation. It does make me wonder if there is a "cause and effect", or "prudent protective scheme" going on, with some of the recent changes, since imagine what could ensue should if naval personnel were still issued rum rations, AND twerking dancers were in the vicinity of said personnel, given the reputation of many sailors around the globe. |
