…and chlorine chemical weapons against rebels

"Investigators appointed by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) believe the Syrian military dropped a chlorine bomb in 2018 on a residential rebel-held area in north-west Syria, the chemical weapons watchdog said on Monday.

I am not surprised.

Yes not surprised at all … They'd use more powerful WMDs most likely if that had them …

Poor people….nobody cares…

Not that nobody cares … nobody can really do anything about it. In that region, some places in Africa, A'stan and even Pakistan. You can't fix anything until they want to fix it themselves. But it seems by the time that happens many, many more will die, be maimed, etc.

So is there global outrage yet?

There seem to be many retired and active officers of the armed forces here. Explain to me the reason for such a use of toxic substances regular armed forces? In my opinion, its combat value is negligible. But for anti-government PR this is an invaluable reason.
So who benefited from it?

If I were a potential target of Syrian gas it would be a fear inducing weapon. It may be militarily weak unless there is some concerted effort made to punish the regime; it's a useful tool to them. Now if all of a sudden there was a large army mobilized to punish Syria for it (and possibly cost it the war) that would be different but somehow I think those who decided to use it knew the odds of being punished. They use it because they can and there's little downside and they have the means to deliver it unhindered.

The results of Information Warfare (or disinformation) on the international community is far greater and more valuable than the military value of using tactical chemical weapons. This is a card that can be played against Syria at some future time; Syria was wise to invite a strong Russian presence in their country or they may have gone the way of Libya. And to think Libya had long ago given up any pursuit to WMD and the neocons still took them down.

In August 2012, President Obama was asked about what could lead him to use military force in Syria. "We have been very clear to the Assad regime," he said, "that a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized. That would change my calculus."

And yet, we did nothing. Shameful.

The shameful thing was pretending we were going to do something about it in the first place.

👍👍

Many militaries have WMDs, including Chem & Bio. They are there as a sort of as a last resort, etc.,. Like MAD … I was even "chosen" when in the 101 as a 1LT. To be an Atomic Demolition Missions Officer. In short, going in with team/being inserted and deploying a back pack A-bomb of 1/2 or 1 KT, IIRC. Then E&E or being extracted[hopefully?] … old fart Probability of having to execute this type of op would be very, very small. But we still went thru the training. It is no longer classified, you can look it up online, etc.

We trained to operate in these WMD type environments. But we know chances are we will never have to face these type weapon including Nukes. Just like we were trained to use a reserve parachute. Better to have one and know how to use it than vis versa …

In my opinion, its combat value is negligible.
Generally with chem & bio it is. Being weather dependent, etc., etc. Unless you are talking about A-bombs/Nukes. But as we know those are not "clean", etc., etc.

Many of us went thru a course – Nuclear, Bio, Chem[NBC] Defense training. But we like most militaries have Chemical Corps, etc., type troops as well. For primarily defense but also for offensive ops, if need be, etc.

The Russians and Chinese, etc., have similar NBC capabilities … It is nothing rare …

As far as outrage … which one ? The Syrians using Chem, the North Korean "gulags"/death camps or the PRC/CCP's muslim genocide. And don't forget the ISIS genocide of Yazidis, and just about everyone else that was not ISIS. Plus the slave trade still going on in Africa, the Mid East, e.g. Libya, etc., etc.

Call in the UN … LOL !!!! 😃😄😂🤣😆

It is still a dangerous world out there … But the US is cutting back on it's Military about 10% … 🤔😮
