So I'm a 28mm man, most likely to game solo, and would have to paint up two armies to game. It seems to me that if I wanted to dabble in Napoleonic gamming I'd be best served by concentrating on the smaller battles of the era.

I'm thinking battles no bigger than say Gefrees, Halberstadt or Olper in 1809. So forces only a few thousand strong maybe 6 or so infantry battalions, a cavalry regiment and a couple of guns per side nothing bigger possibly smaller.

What rules out there might suit my purposes of this level of command as well as ideally being quick play, usable solo, with battalions as the basic unit and fought on a modest 6 ft wargames table with 28mm miniatures.

any help gratefully received.

Neil Thomas' rules are worth looking at. Also Bello Ludi. If you're not averse to grids Bob Cordery has a Napoleonic set. Or you could go radically old school and try Bruce Quarrie's rules which would fit your force limits perfectly.

+1 for Neil Thomas's Napoleonic Wargaming book – good rules that fit the size of game you are looking for.

I'd keep Peter Young's "Charge!" in mind, though I usually use Aelred Glidden's "Charge! for Dummies."

Lasalle would work well (either v1 or v2)

321 Fast Play Napoleonic Rules is an excellent read and is free! The guy that writes them is constantly updating them.
His table setups are inspirational.
Can't hurt to take a look…

As an alternative, you could look at Volley & Bayonet or DBN for larger battles with fewer troops on smaller tables.

+1 for Lasalle, the new edition is just out, tactical rules and good for smaller battles.

Wellington Rules by Buck Surdu work for small battles. I use them for Was of 1812.

Any idea where Aelred Glidden's "Charge! For Dummies" can be found? I have heard about it a few times, but it seems rather hard to track down. I know he alot of his rules were in the old MWAN issues, but this title seems rather elusive.

I like Over the Hills for games of the size mentioned by the OP, but can easily go up to divisional size.
