Rate your interest in gaming the present and coming South China Sea Conflict between the USA, and perhaps some of its allies in the region, on a 0 – 10 scale, with 10 being the most interested.

Thinking of combined air and sea skirmishes and battles, where yes, even ground troops may be needed to help take and hold those little islets and man-made islands.

May be primarily USA vs. China, but other allies from the local region, or even far away may weigh in if China decides to close the sea to maritime traffic, or restrict it in some way, or if they attack a smaller nation with a presence there, like Taiwan, the Phillipines, or Vietnam.

If someone else does all the heavy lifting and has simple rules, I'll play.

0. This one has too good a chance to be Current Events rather than Speculative Fiction.

You don't have a low enough number. They'd have to pay me.

9. Play it as a hypothetical before it becomes historical. I've received my Type-55's from Shapeways.

A high 0. Maybe, just maybe, I could be persuaded to participate in such a game if someone else provides the models, rules and table.

I didn't even know there _was_ a South China Sea conflict. Has WW3 started and no-one told me?

I'll play anything if someone else provides the toys, but isn't anything I'd put the slightest effort into doing myself as modern hypotheticals don't interest me.

I'm a 10+.

Well Martin, right now it is on a rather low simmer/boil, depending upon who you talk to, but China's making more moves again, and has anchored a whole fleet of 200+ "fishing vessels" in the EEZ of The Phillipines:

They used the same strategy when they lied, and then took over some other atolls/islands in the region, so it looks like history IS repeating.

Then of course, there was this incident between China and Vietnam back in 1988, where Chinese troops massacred a lot of Vietnamese personnel:

And, of course, let's not forget the Chinese "Taran-style" aircraft attack on one of our American patrol planes, coincidentally, 20 years ago today, which forced it down in Chinese territory:

The Filipinos claim they'll be sending fighter jets over their SCS territory, and over the Chinese vessels there, so that could be interesting. They're also claiming they'll now defend their "sovereign territory" as well, though I really doubt it, since they've backed off of such claims in the past.

I didn't even know The Phillipines had any military jets, but it appears they have some FA-50s from South Korea. Last time I checked they had nothing. Looks like they have 12 of these now, plus 6 Super Tacanos, and a few OV-10 Broncos (7).

Those against a few Chinese jets could make for an interesting scenario, or two, though there is no doubt who would prevail in any real dust up.

I've played around with it using "Shipwreck" rules, so yes.

Also, I highly recommend them for modern naval in general. Easier than wading through Harpoon.

BigNickR05 Apr 2021 10:50 a.m. PST

I'd play if there were a minis and set of rules. modern is interesting
