On this thread, TMP link … we got into a discussion about the NATO supply and replacement, etc., situation if WWIII broke out. I'm sure we talked about this on TMP. I can't even find anything online on this topic. Looking for some intel on the topic since I can't find … Appreciated any assistance … Thanks ! |

During the DRS tests in the late 1970s, one aspect of logistics we evaluated was the pre-positioned supply points. An effort to avoid clogged depots which made each targets for Soviet missies and aircraft. Some aspects were good others were puzzling. The transportation to dump at the site required women to end up near the front lines far ahead of the secure rear areas. This was a time of women still holding a protected position. Which is a thread on itself. I experienced several real world events on it. Anyway the PPs points were important as was MRS routes. The equipment and vehicle storage locations were expected to be target in hour one. Supply was the reason, the US hoped for a 30 day tension buildup rather than a west turn attack by the WP. |

Could we compare late 80s NATO logistic with Gulf war 1991. logistic, operational part |

I'd say yes … at least for the US. As I said, I served on active duty '79-'90. I was a Air Assault Rifle & 81mm Plt Ldr than a Bn Air Ops Officer, and later a Mech Co Cdr. But I also was a Bn Log Ofr for a Mech Bn, a Mech Hvy Bn & Bde Maint Ofr and finally an Asst. Mech Hvy Bde Log Ofr. So I got a pretty go mix of both being a Tactician & Logistician. |

What is your opinion on time needed for mobilisation, transportation and going to attack? I guess that NATO could be ready after 6 month of preparations |

In both West Germany & the ROK, you had a small number of units on alert. Just in the event the war started. Those in country will go to Assembly Areas/Lateral Dispersion Areas, etc. The units on the ground in country would have many units who could mobilize fairly quickly with each Div having a Div Ready Bde or Bn. But we are talking maybe 1/3 of the Div/Bde, etc. Literally in a matter of a few hours some units like the Cav in Fulda Gap. They could be combat ready … But overall the number of unit like that would be small. At best … maybe 1/3 of the forces in country ? To fully mobilize most of NATO … 6 months is a good number. But again will the units in country survive that long ? Units in country would go in a bit staggered. Based on their location and state of readiness when the war started. The units in country would initially fight holding/delaying actions. Attrite as much of the USSR/WP forces as possible . Losses could be high on both sides … This would a modern mobile/combined arms/Air-Land Battle. Which much of that was doctrine. All units supporting each other, i.e. Infantry, Armor, FA, ADA, Gunships and of course CAS. The A-10 was designed for this type of action. Working with gunships, FA support, etc. I think I talked about this on another thread here too … TMP link May have answered some of your questions, etc. |
