[Gasp!] They blacked out the swastika on the Afrika Korps palm tree!

[Gasp!] They blacked out the swastika…

Hmmm. I assumed it was because the tank in question is from the Panzer Museum in Muenster, Germany. My understanding is that swastikas are not allowed in Germany -- notice for example the national markings on any WW2 German equipment in any MMO game that is available in Germany (perhaps such as World of Tanks).

But in the video (at about 2:30 – 2:40) the Chieftain mentions that it is the fact that the video crew -- Russians and probably Byelorussians -- who have mandated that it be covered. Presumably so that the video can play in the CIS.

Hmmm.

Not exactly. German Criminal Law prohibits public use of or distribution of symbols of unconstitutional groups. However the law states: "Subsection (1) shall not be applicable if the means of propaganda or the act serves to further civil enlightenment, to avert unconstitutional aims, to promote art or science, research or teaching, reporting about current historical events or similar purposes."

As such limited use of the swastika is allowed. In a museum setting such as the Panzer Museum there would be no need to censor the Afrika Korps symbol. However use in a game would not fall under the exception.

Interesting side-bar.
The 1966 movie Is Paris Burning? was filmed in black and white so that original WW2 footage could be included, including the infamous scene where the Resistance threw Molotov cocktails into the backs of German lorries and real soldiers are seen leaping out burning.
The French did not want the traditional red, white and black swastika flags flying over Paris again during the filming but compromised – the red flags were switched for green ones. The green filmed like red (in black and white) and thus the illusion was restored.

I did the research for the scripting of the Matilda video. The Comet too.

I used to say that I wrote the script. And I did write a script. But the Chieftain was not to be limited by any written script. No, based on his experience he can figure out and describe as much based on what he finds and sees, as can be found in any of the original manuals that were used in the scripting research.

But I sure got to do some interesting work in those days…
