There is a casual neglect and ignorance of the Eastern Roman Empire (never known as the 'Byzantine' Empire until after the empire fell in 1453).

The empire lasted for about 1,000 years after Rome fell and protected Europe from eastern invasions from a variety of peoples.

And some of the Eastern Roman generals gave excellent military lessons to the West, but are now usually ignored or forgotten.

Calling the Eastern Roman Empire after the fall of Western Roman Empire the Byzantine Empire is a convenient distinction. The East had been mutating substantially in the 5th century and certainly by the end Arab invasion in the 7th century would have been unrecognizable in many ways to Constantine the Great.

True… thanks!
