Building a commanded shot unit to guard ECW artillery (10mm Pendraken). Bought a second hand lot of scythemen to mix up the unit. It came with a sample lot of League of Augsburg figures. Here we go, research, find a rule set, probably build both sides, no one else in the club plays this period. |

Always best to build both sides. I that out the hard way years ago. |

Or if possible in the chosen period pick an army that fought all sides at some point. |

Regardless, Ritter, always two armies. You don't necessarily have to paint the opposition army, but failure to buy one causes opponents to leave town and sometimes manufacturers to drop ranges. |

There's always the, "I picked them up cheap" excuse. |

Cheap being a very flexible term. |

Remember hobby shops that used to take consignment items. Way back when, I purchased some Spanish American War figures – just enough for a small skirmishing action between the Rough Riders and a few Spanish. Well, that collection has grown to over 1000 painted figures. |

Elephant limbered artillery, a Science vs. Pluck file – Second Anglo Afghan War, both sides and a substantial supply column for the British. I was sensible and did it in 15mm. |

Of course having bought both sides, you then need to pick up all the minor Allies as well as the equipment and uniform variations throughout the period. Then it it turns out you can use some of the figures for other periods, but only if you add just one or two other things… |

But I had to buy the Reaper Swamp Hag because she looked just like my old lieutenant colonel. And she really, really needed some skink and lizardmen swamp dwellers as henchmen. And then we found the Western Tiger Salamander in the downstairs shower, so she needed some of those as elite, ninja warriors. And then I read about the super-sized Komodo Dragons which once roamed parts of Australia when the first humans arrived (maybe), and who cryptozoologists think may still be roaming the Outback, and you just know no self-respecting Swamp Hag would walk into battle when she could ride in a howdah atop the dragon. And . . . Grelber I was just sucked in |

Back in my WRG Ancients days, I was building an Achmaenid Persian army. At a convention, I saw Classical Indians in sale. Well, they were pretty good WRG troops. After I got them, I started to build an Indian army. Also, the Skythians had nice auxiliary horse archers. So I built a Skythian army. I played with both Skythian and Indians. Some of my most satisfying victories were with my Indian army. I never did use my Persians… Along the same line, I bought some Gauls as auxiliaries for my Carthaginians. Thus, my huge Gaul/British army. Unlike the Persian army though, I still played with my Carthaginians. |
