… The Past

"Even to our more recent ancestors, the modern American plate would likely be unrecognizable. Gone are the TV dinners and congealed jello salads. In their place are raw fish poke bowls and flaxseed smoothies.

America's diet has changed dramatically over the last few decades. We're eating more chicken and less beef. We're drinking less whole milk but chowing down on more cheese. We're consuming more calories overall and snacking more frequently.

As our eating habits continue to evolve at a quickening pace, we've begun gobbling down foods that previously, weren't even recognized by Americans as edible…"

First time I've seen "smut" described in the affirmative.

Lists activated charcoal, then in the next article says it's dangerous! grin

At one time potatoes were considered the food for the lower classes not to be eaten by those with the wealth.

The tomato was considered to be poisonous until proven otherwise.

Was watching youtube about food in the 18th and 19th centuries and I suspect that what they ate and how they cooked would be strange today. Things including food change over time.

I was eating kale before it was cool, since the 1970s.

Insects don't really do it for me.

Judging the diet of the general public by what food faddists eat is basically dumb.

"The tomato was considered to be poisonous until proven otherwise."

Some enterprising persons went from town to town, charging the people money to watch them eat tomatoes, the audience waiting/hoping for them to die.

In Europe … for years … the aubergine was considered "inedible" and was only used to paint pictures of fruits and vegetables … why? … because of its color … (smile)

I still consider aubergines to be inedible…

For the record, activated charcoal is not food – it is (at best) an additive

According to my researcher the "globalists" want the hoi polloi to eat insects while they get all the real meat.

Lobster was "peasant food" for quite a while because they looked too much like bugs.

von Schwartz ver 223 Mar 2021 5:26 p.m. PST

What the hell is an aubergine? Sounds like a Stripper name!!

AND now on CENTER stage PLEASE give a BIG round of applause for……..Aubergine and her pet pussy….cat.

My brother told me a story, I dont know how true it might be. I'm too tired to Google it, and its a pretty decent yarn.

A European expedition up the Amazon ran into trouble and one of the explorers got separated. He had a small pot and about 3 days food. He blundered around trying to find his party, and ran out of food. There was Cassava everywhere, but he knew it was poisonous. In time, preferring suicide to starvation, he boiled some Cassava and ate it.

Of course he didn't die. Cassava is poisonous when raw.

And thus, Tapioca was born.

It may be BS, but its vivid.

Aubergine = Eggplant

= yum!

At one of our previous churches' annual picnic, SWMBO and I brough the twenty pound turkey deep frier and used to it make tempura veggies. Couldn't keep the tray full (which is good because tempura gets gross when its cold). One of the church matrons hovered around us while we were cooking. Turns out she loves eggplant and her husband abhorred it. WE let her pull 'em straight out for her plate.

I'm pretty much omnivorous. There are a few things I don't care for and a couple I won't eat. But other than that … well … I ate a balut, once. Or, rather my digestive tract borrowed it for a while.

DOM was on a "semester at sea" over the summer in college. Some of the other kids had trouble figuring out local cuisine. One time, apparently, she said, "I don't know. We came here to a port city on a cruise ship. I'm gonna guess the locals eat fish."

Growing up in the '60 and '70 my grandmother use to make watermelon rind pickles and pyracantha berry jam. I liked the jelly but she use cloves with the pickles so I didn't like them.
