"At a makeshift military outpost abutting a natural gas field in eastern Syria, the signs of the country's violent upheaval are everywhere. Bombed-out concrete buildings lie in ruins.

The pipes that once carried liquefied natural gas are shredded and twisted. A tattered U.S. flag strung between 40-foot-tall gas processing towers flies high over the base, a visible symbol that American troops are here — and not planning on leaving soon.

"We've got the flagpole planted," said Army Lt. Alan Favalora, a Louisiana National Guard soldier at Conoco, the name the base acquired from the long-departed U.S. oil and gas firm that once operated the wells. "We want them to know we are committed to this region."…"

I suspect we will come to regret this.

Total waste of resources that does nothing. Proof the American foreign policy elites are either stupid or delusional or insane.

If America wants ISIS gone, let the Russians and Syrians sort it out. They've done it elsewhere.

Half baked meaningless American interventions like these won't solve a thing.

Why are we there???

Reminds me of that line from the knight's squire from the very old movie "The Seventh Seal":

"Our crusade was so stupid that only a true idealist could have thought it up"

No matter if the US is there in Syria or the region or even A'stan. Nothing can be done to "fix" anything until the denizens of those areas decide to move into modernity. And not be so blindly wedded to religion, tribal, ethnic, etc., etc., differences.

However, "You can't free a fish from water"…

So more death and destruction will continue for a long time to come. Hopefully the US and our Allies won't have to suffer anymore losses. Nothing in any of those areas worth us dying for at this time. AQ and ISIS, etc., are no longer the threat they once were to the US/West. We should answer any "threat" with strike aircraft/drones & missiles. In the long run it is cheaper. And no matter how many we kill they will continue to be a threat if only at a lower level.

Too many US flag icons on that map…say, didn't it used to be a bad thing to do this? You know, that old "No Blood for Oil" chant -- or does that only apply based on what party is in charge?? Then "Blood for Oil is Just Fine By Me!" ???

Yes, I remember those chants, etc. But we are … err … were energy independent … wait … never mind …
