Might be a bit of a long shot, but does anyone recall a particular article (possibly a pair of articles over two issues) in Wargames Illustrated years ago, where the writer explained his painting process in detail? It was pretty involved, and may have included oil washes, possibly enamels and more advanced techniques, like replacing swords and lances with beaten/dremelled brass rods. It looked like a lot of work but the results were beautiful. The picture that stands out in my memory was a French Fusilier (or possibly an ally like the Saxons) in a white uniform with violet facings/piping?

I ask because at the time I thought the work involved made it sheer lunacy, but now older and wiser me wishes I had saved it. I had it in the early 2000s but it could have been a much earlier issue I picked up at a show. The author seemed to be someone know for beautiful armies, but I don't recall the name.

Sorry for the paucity of the description, does it ring a bell with anyone?

It may be the following: "An Eccentric's Guide to Painting" by Mark Wilkin. This appeared in WI #139 of April 1999.

Well there are those who obsess over their minis and go in for all sorts of various fancy painting techniques, modifications, and scratch builds. So what, if they find it enjoyable, more power to them, after all, it IS a hobby y'know?

Wow Khanscom, that's the one; thanks. How did you get it from the threadbare description?

I read the article again, and it is very meticulous. Some useful stuff, though I think I'd like a faster process as 5-6 hours a figure is way too slow. One thing that seems a bridge too far for me still; filing away reins and replacing them with stips of card. I like the effect but it does seem like a lot of work for it. Each to their own.

I was nearly right about the fusilier, except it was a gun crew!

I have a somewhat random collection of pre- 21C. wargaming magazines-- mostly "Miniature Wargames", but some WI. The article indicated is one etched indelibly in memory for its compulsiveness(?); fine for display figures, but I've never been tempted to try this for gaming figures.
