There's precious little evidence on Persian immortals, especially what they might have dressed like, so here's some questions for those who have included them in their collection: Do you give them Spara or the Dipylon (violin case) shields? What do you do, uniform wise, to distinguish them from Sparabara? Do you prefer robes or Mede attire? Are your immortals uniform in appearance or wildly varied like your normal Persians? In the case of late period immortals (so-called apple bearers) do you equip them with Hoplite gear? I am aware of the literature on these issues, I'm just asking for personal preferences among fellow Persian army players. |

Spara, armed with bow and spear, Mede, uniform appearance. Others with spear armed first rank and only bow for rest. |

Early – Front Rank Sparabara, rear rank Diplyon. All have bows as well. Essex 15mm. Color is white robes, reddish maroon shields and light blue accents (I bought the first unit painted and painted others to match). Later – I use the old glory 15mm figs, mede armor but hoplon shields. Uniform, maroon robes, yellow tiara, light purple shields with eagle emblem. For both I have 16 man units. |

Median robes … camels behind them to carry their baggage. Phil |

In our Old Glory Petsian range we made 4 packs of "exotic infanty" for the Persian infantry we, in reality know scant little. I used one of these as my immortals. Russ Dunaway |

Don't currently have any but would use robes, all the same colour, as noted spears at the front, bows behind |

-Do you give them Spara or the Dipylon (violin case) shields? Both, I usually make the gerrha shields a separate barrier and the first rank has shields, so the unit is more versatile. Gerrha shields often fall off since they have terrible attachment points, so they work better as a stacked up wall that can be placed like a hedge. -What do you do, uniform wise, to distinguish them from Sparabara? Make them fancier, conversely make others duller and less ornate. Usually I use armored models for the elites- even though we are told that armor was often worn underneath an outer vest. I tend to make guard units have more purple and yellow stripes than the rest. -Do you prefer robes or Mede attire? Robes only for palace guards. If it was a fanciful skirmish games of Spartans raiding the royal pavilion then robed would be cool. -Are your immortals uniform in appearance or wildly varied like your normal Persians? I usually choose one uniform item tunic or pants and allow variations on the other. -In the case of late period immortals (so-called apple bearers) do you equip them with Hoplite gear? Yes but I strive for either bow, bow and spear, spear and shield. Not bow and shield based on the scant artistic evidence. However I realize that often models don't come that way and I have settled for bow and shield. Often game rules are kind of anal about a lot of this- but these combined arms units always seem to jack things up. Plastic figures almost always have the bowcases separate now, so that makes choosing options easier. |

For the later Immortals I went colourful and pretty. The shield transfers do most of the work, though.
My early Immortals are in robes and in similarly fanciful colours.
I don't think these models have bows sculpted on them, but it doesn't really matter. |

Later period dressed as heavy spear with mirrored shields. Not as fancy as the ones above, but more utilitarian. Persian Immortals, or possibly Persian Kardaces depending on how you read the sources. Herodotus describes them as having hoplons with no blazon and polished to a mirror like brightness. link

As I said. I essentially made mine up. I desired them to look exotic and different then the medes and to have a very distinct Eastern appearance-- not just rearranged Medes or Hoplites. They are after all -- they were the elite palace guard. Russ Dunaway |
