My home town has a Civil War monument with statues of members of the different services around a central pylon, flanked by two cannon. When I was a kid, we never visited the monument, just drove by it. The cannon were pretty much the same color as the statues and pylon, so I just assumed they were actually stone statues of cannon. One day, the city decided to do a serious clean and refurbish of the memorial, and Hokey Smokes, Bullwinkle!! those were real bronze civil War cannon! Anyway, now they are well tended, and you can see the shiny bronze and olive carriages. On the other hand, we have a good idea of the value (genuine Civil War cannon sell for thousands of dollars to collectors) and the guns are now chained in place. The city, to its considerable credit, has passed on offers to sell the cannon. And I got to do something I never did as a kid: go over and look at the guns seriously. Who'd a thunk, something that nifty in a town the middle of Kansas! Grelber |
