"Despite a revival in the divisional level of warfighting in the British Army, thinking on security away from the front lines has failed to keep pace with the evolution in the character of warfare in the 21st Century. Specifically, thinking has been constrained by an industrial view of warfare. It is rooted in war fighting at scale and does not adequately reflect the realities of how the British Army wishes to operate, constrain, and fight opponents in the 21st Century. This article argues that the geographic framework currently used in British doctrine – the deep, close, rear model – must be revised to reflect the need for the provision of security over a large area at formation level. This must be done in order to meet the new Integrated Operating Concept functions. To explain the logic behind this, this article will look at the possible future operating environment, NATO and US thinking on the subject, and examine the term wide area security, before looking in detail at current British doctrine…" Main page link Armand

The rear area did not exist in the 1980s. When I was at the Quartermasters Officers Advance Course, my research assignment was to update the Soviet threat to our rear area. A great assignment. I was able to bring my Armored Cavalry background into use. Our assignment post contact was to patrol the rear area. |

Yes, IMO rear areas do still exist. But not in the traditional WWII, etc., sense. Or as even in the 80s when I was on active duty too. Insurgency by it's nature is different than a conventional war. But local security and patrolling will still be useful. |

Of course it doesn't exist when the British Army only has one "fieldable" combined arms division that is scheduled to lose a lot of combat capability in the next round of cuts and which even now isn't on a par with an equivalent Russian division especially in terms of artillery. |

We certainly thought about the rear areas in the 80s, one task of Bde, Div and Corps Recce was rear area security, likewise elements of the TA were tasked with rear area security. Tally Ho! |

In the 80s we in the US and UK military, etc., knew if war broke out we could expect Russian/WP paras, SF and possibly "5th Columnists", etc. In our rear areas. I.e. never underestimate your enemy, as we know. The same situation could of happen in the ROK with the county having long coastlines on 3 sides. And even the North digging tunnels under the DMZ as well as trying to infiltrate along the DMZ. Our patrols and guard posts had to be concerned about that as well … lose a lot of combat capability in the next round of cuts and which even That is a very big fear here by many in the USA now as well. The money for all this "social reimagining", etc., etc., of US society and culture, etc. has to come from somewhere. Plus the open Southern border situation[crisis] with the massive costs all that incurs. Money does not grow on trees, sadly. It has to come from somewhere and it appears some may may come from the US Military and maybe Veteran programs. Seems some of the top US leadership may be hiding their heads in the sand. Hoping the PRC/CCP will somehow no longer be a threat ? Not to mention Iran, Putin, Un, jihadis, etc. It still is a very dangerous world out there. Regardless how those in charge wordsmith terms, names, etc. in an Orwellian 1984 manner. I'm pretty sure the PRC did not care about the skin color of Asians in Doctor Seuss books … They are playing Go or Chess while many leaders in the US are playing checkers or pitching pennies … To our own population's peril … |
