"A return to World War II-style meat rationing? That's the idea suggested by writer and activist Donnachadh McCarthy.

Why does he want it? To help the environment and get post-lockdown Britain back on its feet. McCarthy is part of the Extinction Rebellion movement.

Reports state the government is considering a 40% carbon emissions tax on the food industry. For McCarthy the move will only benefit those with deep pockets. He believes rationing is a "fair way" of reducing emissions that enables access to meat for all…"

We really are well on our way to a global Idiocracy.

We need to ration the activists.

Shagnasty Supporting Member of TMP09 Mar 2021 10:16 a.m. PST

Ditto to both the above!

Brian Smaller09 Mar 2021 10:40 a.m. PST

I will just go outside and put another cow in the freezer. Rationing is for people who don't grow their own food.

mildbill09 Mar 2021 11:18 a.m. PST

Hey buddy, I gots some stuff that fell off the truck at a slighty higher price…

Col Durnford09 Mar 2021 11:19 a.m. PST

Eat an activist for a better world.

As soon as the word "activist" comes into play, it pretty much means a person who is pushing an agenda and cannot be trusted to give a reasonable and balanced take on anything.

+1 Col Durnford

The only problem there is that they are usually tough, stringy, and tasteless no matter how much catsup.

javelin98, Nah. He's 60 or so (so, born around '60), but I'm sure he'd be happy to move out of his £750,000.00 GBP home (It's easy being green when you have millions to spend on it and don't count total impact of your actions.) and actually live under rationing in a warzone. I could probably arrange transportation to several currently going on, but being so eco-conscious, he'd probably prefer to walk.

Zephyr109 Mar 2021 3:33 p.m. PST

Another brick of good intentions for the Road to Hell they want to put us on…

Texaswalker09 Mar 2021 3:36 p.m. PST

I think that his idea is a good one and should be mandated, leading to widespread bootlegging of meat and a complete political refutation and repudiation of these idiotic extreme type of views. By the way, I just saw on line an expression that the recent 100 year freeze we had here in Texas, which burst the pipes over my garage, is the result of global warming. To be sure, I am not saying that global warming does not exist and may be a problem, but ascribing cold temperatures to global warming is straining by credence quite a bit.

ascribing cold temperatures to global warming is straining by credence quite a bit

The problem is the term "global warming". That is absolutely certainly happening right now. Not unusual.

picture

What is also happening, is the volatility of temperature is also increasing.
picture

So, our global climate change is affecting both average temperature and variation of temperature.

The big thing to consider is that we are talking about 100 year hottest or coldest. One thousand year is an analytical concept to which a human can't really directly relate. Let alone 4.5B years. All of human history is a single bacterium in a pimple on the ass of time.

Texaswalker09 Mar 2021 4:12 p.m. PST

Wow, I feel like a miniscule contribution to a single bacterium on a pimple on the ass of time. What a great expression, I feel very honored. Etotheipi, thanks for the good perspective.

Texaswalker09 Mar 2021 4:20 p.m. PST

etotheipi, what does your nom de plume mean? I assumed it was a Greek word for something, and it seemed to be somewhat familiar, and it was intriquing, but I tried to google it and could find nothing.

Wolfhag09 Mar 2021 5:40 p.m. PST

I think it's a great idea. Working the red meat Black Market will help supplement my retirement income.

Bingo ! And as of late … they seem to be everywhere !!! huh?

Arjuna10 Mar 2021 4:04 a.m. PST

@Texaswalker

etotheipi is into irrational numbers.

Some would say in one of the most beautyful combinations we know of.
e^(i*pi)
Which equals -1
Which is a special case of Euler's formula.
Which shows the fundamental connection between trigonometric and complex exponential functions.

Which in every kind of meaning is witty as it shows wit and wits.

… what were we talking about?
Rationing, rationality, irrational games?

Homer Simpson and e^(i*pi) on Youtube

Arjuna – Dead on.

etotheipi = e to the i pi, which, of course, is pronounced "the negative one". :)

… what were we talking about?
Rationing, rationality, irrational games?

I'm usually talking about this …

… but I believe the thread is about irrational rationing.

thanks for the good perspective.

The analogy may be a little tongue in cheek (what a horrible pun there), but the larger part of science is not explaining the data you have, but rather giving a rationale for the information you are not using.

"I'm skipping the first 4.1999999998 years of data and just using the last two-hundred because that doesn't tell my story" probably isn't a good approach. (In this case, "I'm skipping the first 1.3-1.7B years because the Earth was in a radically different formative state than it is now" is not a bad one.) The context omission is similar to "let's ration food" vs "I'm so rich that I don't have any food security issues or quality issues and could pay to have all the food I need grown for me on my property".

Arjuna10 Mar 2021 5:15 a.m. PST

Damn, 'the negative one' I overlooked.
I'm getting old and sloppy.
Soon they got me and tie me a slipknot.

evil grin

P.s
I grok what we are talking about, just a few puns from my side.
It's about Meat.

Texaswalker10 Mar 2021 10:48 a.m. PST

Arjuna and etotheipi,
So we start with e to an irrational power, which is an impossible concept for me to understand, and proceed through an infinite series which we jerk apart to arrive at Eulers equation, which of course we all remember is cospi +isinpi = e to the i times pi for this case. etotheipi, your TMP member name is a homework project for a postgraduate Mathematics student, but I get it, you're the negative one, although your posts seem pretty positive to me. I am always impressed, and no sarcasm here at all, with the depth of knowledge in all sorts of esoteric fields exhibited by the folks on TMP.

Arjuna10 Mar 2021 11:54 a.m. PST

@Texaswalker

And that is one of reasons I always come back here after years and years of hiatus.
I'm somewhat of an ancient one, a lurking shapeshifter roaming this realm since the dawn of time under changing names and often personas.
I'm probably an older member than the OFM!
Last time I posted here in one of my incarnations was about the time they bullied him with those bloody personal polls.
A lot of people left back then.
Some because of that.

So from time to time I even entertain the honourable audience.
Allthough, from one moment to the other I may be gone for a long time.
I remember tmp personas long forgotten.
Ask someone if they still remeber the 'Big mean elf' and its rise and fall as a poser.
I remeber a time even a women came here and raised her voice.
Unbelievable isn't it?
Wemenfolk, I say!

Now, that is arcane and esoteric knowledge, don't you say?
What is on the other hand the knowledge of the number of buttons on the uniform of a 2nd rank brigadier of the Polish Guard Lancers in 1813 when thy rode on horses contributed by the German princes and others purchased in Hannover?
evil grin

Dust in the wind!
Forgotten.

And now that formula
It is a ring, so to say, not in an algebraic sense that is, that binds together five extremely important numbers in a way that connects some equally important mathematical concepts which at first glance do not seem to have much in common.
In a quite simple way.
And that is its beauty.
The beauty mathematicians awe.

No, I am not serious about all this.
That is my fun on tmp.

P.s
No, this is not sock puppetry.
I use mail adresses just temporarily and discard the old ones, so I always have to use a new account here and elsewhere.

e to an irrational power, which is an impossible concept

If you do a web search for Euler and XKCD, you will find a webcomic (called XKCD, which is a nerd reference to a LINUX command) that explains the concept completely. Said comic cannot be repeated in these forums.

Arjuna10 Mar 2021 8:17 p.m. PST

e to the pi times i on xkcd.com

So, did Terence Tao could prove in the meantime that there must exists a xkcd comic for any object in the universe, be it imaginary or otherwise?

I am a big fan of fish for meals. Will someone make "fake fish" ??!? I hope not !!!!

Arjuna12 Mar 2021 11:07 a.m. PST

Of course they do, silly!

Vegan 'fish' recipes on veganfoodandliving.com

Recipes that don't sound so bad and even look good.
What I do not understand is why they have to call it fish.
That is a ridiculous marketing ploy, probably just to fill that website.

Now, I also love sea food.
Coincidentially I preecook some giant tiger prawns in tomato garlic sauce as a stew for tomorrow.
The stew has to steep about a day.
With spaghetti will it then.
Delicious!

But I stopped eating squids.
Since I know how intelligent some of those species are, I stay away from them.
Call me sentimental, but I love them.
