Has anyone tried to recreate a movie version of a World War Two game? By that I mean tan M47's and M48s painted up as Panzers or T-34s dressed up like Tigers to recreate a nattle scene from a movie?

I know some people have gamed Kelly's Heroes, but did you do it with a T-34 dressed up as a Tiger and intentionally incorrect M4s?

Have you gamed Fury with a mix of Shermans and magically appearing and disappearing Panzerfausts?

Anyone else have any suggestions?

My dear friend… it going to be difficult to find that … (smile)

Most gamers tend to be "purists" in their games … I find it difficult for someone to have the will to make M47 or M48 painted like in the old movies to play … sure that in the past many will have done it … but YouTube sure didn't exist also … (smile)

Those are quite new…

In 1/144, Takara / World Tank Museum (OOP),had 'specials' of the M47 'Tiger II' from 'The Battle Of The Bulge' and a tarted up Leopard 'Panther' from 'A Bridge Too Far'.

Nice little pieces, but quite rare on ebay…although I have picked up a couple..for 'sensible' prices! lol.

I suppose, in a way, life imitating art, the Takara line also has a panther made up to resemble an M-10 as used in Operation Greif. This was of course an actual attempt to deceive but perhaps the Germans were already positioning themselves for after war movies as well :)

The issue with doing this is that most gamers of my acquaintance like the model on the table to portray what it's supposed to be. If I had M48s already and no Tigers I'd maybe invite my opponent to consider them Tigers, but it's generally a bit unsatisfactory to have deem something to be something else. Film-makers have to, because money / availability.

It doesn't make a lot of difference between one Sherman and another, because in capability they're all much of muchness (even 75 versus 76mm, when it comes to Tigers). But there can't be many players who'd be interested in acquiring M48s expressly to use as Tigers for the purposes of one game. The models would be of very limited utility in any other game.

If I were recreating a movie scenario I'd probably make a point of using the correct kit…one day I'd like to do the battle from The Eagle Has Landed in 1/32, which would require, for the Germans, figures in German tunics with British paratroopers trousers, boots and weapons…

I'm pretty sure I saw a Kelleys Heroes game at Salute some years ago….and I think they did do it as per the movie.

if it happened then someone must have pictures!

Warlord made tanks from the movie as kits.

I've thought about doing a civil war game with the figures painted as reenactors. Some non-period gear, some modern buildings on the fringes of the battlefield, maybe a campground with a mix of period tents and modern.

And then inverting the quality of troops with the quality of the reenactment uniforms. Good reenactors are more likely to "die" as part of the reenactment. Whereas the newer, not quality reenactors would be more likely to charge ahead to "win".

Has anyone tried to recreate a movie version of a World War Two game?

Why would we want to do that? Before SPR, Hollywood used what's available to represent enemy armor in movies like 'Battle of the Bulge,' 'Anzio,' 'The Big Red One' and even 'A Bridge Too Far' because they don't have much of a choice. In more recent movies like 'SPR' and 'Fury,' Hollywood now has the resources to either dress up a T-34 to look reasonably like a Tiger or borrow one from a museum. Even the latest CG does a pretty good job.

Gamers never faced the problem Hollywood had back then so why would we do it? As a cheesy tongue-in-cheek homage to old WWII movies that aren't so great? This isn't the same as faking a Panther to look like an M10 like IRL.

I would say all Western (Cowboy) games are Movies games.
The same would go for almost all Pirate games.
Also, while VSF games may use historic figures, the setting is much more from the movies. And often involve painting in very non-historic ways.

Here is a fun example:

Paining your figures in Black and White to match a movie more than history.

But beyond the Zombie WWII (or other Weird Wars), most WWII gamers go for more history and less movies.

Oh there is this:

Desert Commando Patrol jeeps (2) and 4 LRDG crew – gunners and drivers (4 total minis) (1/56th)

Sounding quite historic but, looking much more like the TV show "Rat Patrol".

You don't need any special figures or models to game Hollywood. The good guys have a dice with sixes on all sides, the bad guys have dice with only ones on them. Hit on six.

I thought about this as I saw a game once where a person did a game that was based on a schlocky sci-fi movie where you had a Japanese invasion of an South Pacific Island defended by US Marines and had dinosaurs as well. The whole game was done in black and white (even the terrain) and was amazing to behold.

I wonder if someone could capture the first big battle in Patton using a color filter paint job.

Yeah, it's niche, I don't think there will be waves of gamers making games this way, but I also didn't think gamers would adopt the weird tank designs that never got beyond prototype stage that seem to crop up in table top games as well. World of Tanks seems have been the reason for this.

That's a great idea, but where are you going to find enough overweight re-enactor Civil War figures???

Damon.

I used to have a Roco minitanks M-47 that I painted as Col Hessler's command tank. Just to annoy my players, back in the day (1970s). Found it again when we cleaned out my parents' house and used it in a 15 mm game. It's still annoying!

I've often wondered if the miracle of CGI could be used to replace vehicles in films. So, digitally replace the M-48s in Patton with digital Pz 3s, that sort of thing. I'm sure it would have to be a labor of love, as it wouldn't make any money.

Although I also think that someone should take some voice recognition software and use it to replace every instance of the word "love" in the movie "A Walk in the Sun" with the more appropriate term. It would certainly add to the film's period "feel."

Well victory force makes some literal reenactment dudes…maybe someday they will make overweight civil war folk.

leidang04 Mar 2021 2:18 p.m. PST

Someone ran a Fighting Seabees game at Rockcon one year that was all done in black and white. It was definitely an eye catching game.

I also saw a whole gangster table layout in a magazine that was all done in greyscale and it was absolutely awesome.

14Bore04 Mar 2021 2:31 p.m. PST

I think it would be a riot, but many movies and TV shows in Russia these days seem to be using quite real vehicles.

Use 15mm figures?

Actually I like the War Movies and my rules let you play The Movies. One set actually has a Saving Private Ryan scenario … popular at cons. I've gamed Major Dundee. Of course some of the real larger than life fights are fun too … Pegasus Bridge. OK Corral. The Great Raid. Frost at Arnhem Bridge.

Cheers!

Most of my solo war games are played using the "John Laroquette Rules" from the movie Stripes.
