So, what are the real world implications of a Russian naval port in the Sudan? Obviously, it gives them a toe-hold in Africa, and allows them to stay "on station" for extended periods of time. Any chance of serious participation in shipping protection/anti-piracy patrols? link |

Russians are already involved in anti-piracy patrols in the region. Bit more effective than western navies too given the Russian blow the pirates out of the water instead of letting them go. |

Afraid I can't remember WHERE in that hellish region it was… but Brits had a naval facility. If you were sent up-river to an outpost… you WENT ROUND THE BEND (!) in the river. Given the climate and that the locals do not seem to have changed much, feel sorry for the Russians. |
