You were asked – TMP link

Which is your favorite aircraft carrier?

And in the final round:

42% – "USS Enterprise (CV6)"
22% – "HMS Ark Royal"
11% – "USS Yorktown (CV5)"

No surprise there. I highly recommend Edward Stafford's The Big E for anyone interested in the evolution of modern carrier warfare.

I still consider it infamous that she was not preserved after WW II.

Sorry I missed that.

I would have said the USS Wasp or USS Hornet.

My grandfather worked on them for GE as a draftsman.

US Navy ship with most Battle Stars from W.W. II was cut up for scrap.

Terrible.

I believe she was still in her W.W.II straight deck design when they chopped her. How cool it would be to walk those decks today.

That being said, I think that USS Yorktown (CV5) was a harder fighting ship, the true victor of Midway. Although walking her decks today would require an act of God.

Not taking anything away from Yorktown (CV5), but I don't think we can call her a harder fighting ship when she missed the majority of the war and Enterprise did not.

Yeah, scrapping Enterprise was a crime. Admiral Halsey led a fund raising effort to save her, but even Bull Halsey couldn't win that battle :(

Choctaw,

I kinda view it that Yorktown was at the first throw down (Coral Sea), put up a fight and got a bloody nose.

In the second round, Midway, Yorktown played with an injury (still repairing battle damage from Coral Sea). Even so, her air group was the one that showed the way and put a great deal of hurt on the IJN.

Enterprise did her part sinking Akagi (almost passed up, thank you Dick Best) and Kaga, but taken to the Japanese carriers by Yorktown's lead.

At Eastern Solomons and Santa Cruz, Enterprise was not at her best, but survived which is something that Lady Lex, Yorktown and Hornet could not do.

So of the 4 big carrier battles, Yorktown is swinging away in the first two (draw and win), Enterprise at last 3, but doesn't lead the way in the win (Midway), OK at the draw, but beat up (Eastern Solomons) and really beat badly at the loss (Santa Cruz).

I am a fan of Enterprise, just think Yorktown did more fighting when it was really on the line.
