HI all! I am painting up a gaggle of Foundry Celts, and want to use Little Big Men transfers Unfortunately he doesn't make them specifically for Foundry figs One option he brought up is ordering shields from the companies that he does have transfers for: Gripping Beast, Old Glory, and A&A and use those with my Foundry figs I'd appreciate any advice on size compatibility, appearance, etc right now A&A look the best to me, but I haven't seen any in person to see how they size up with Foundry Thanks for any input! A&A are just the ticket- I bought several hundred for use with various minis (mostly Black Tree and Renegade), alongside some other shields. If you have the older Foundry Celts they might be a little smaller than these, but I still think you'd be OK.

These shields look very nice. But in reality, very few shields would have been painted in such exquisite detail. Fewer still would have survived the rough handling of a military campaign. Most of our armies are much more beautiful than they would have been in reality. You could get a way with very simple patterns or natural wood if you aim for a realistic army. |

Hi Legionarius! I know we overdo things a bit… I just really like the look of a fancy army :) I even put transfers on my 10mm Romans… It's an illness I have Chris |

NOLA Chris Good for you! No problem. My troops also tend to look better than what I think the real ones looked. It's "the look of the thing" that attracts us to miniature gaming after all. Cheers! |

Exquisite detail? Most of the shield decals show basic curves and checks. A few animals here and there. No real detail at all. If you see shield designs like this for real you can see they're not all that fancy. They also last a lot longer than you might think. Here's a picture of some reenactor with a shield that likely hasn't been painted in years:
It has loads of scuffs and dents, the paint has flaked off the rawhide edge but the design is mostly there still. I'd suggest reenactment use would be akin to campaign abuse given reenactors are likely to receive far more blows given the non-lethal nature of the hobby and actual combat would have a few more cuts to the front from sharp swords. For the more affluent they would be able to repair their equipment as they would have wagons with their personal effects and vassals to do the work, they likely have spare equipment too. |
