Osprey tells us, in some detail, about the Dragoon model saber guard, and I think it's from Viskovatov. However, the alternate web source, where we first learned of the rarity of the kiwer on Russian Infantry and Hussars, has this brief comment re early cuirassier sabers: "In 1809, new swords were ordered for both guard and line in two models. (The 1806 dragoon pattern is an error.)" So if that is in error, what were the cuirassiers carrying before 1809? |

I am not an expert, but there is such information on the Russian Internet: Since the 1700s, the following types of broadswords were in service with the Russian regular army: Dragoon broadsword, officer, 1700s Dragoon broadsword, officer, 1720s Dragoon broadsword, soldier (2 options), 1750s Cuirassier broadsword, 1740s Broadsword of the Life Guards Cavalry Regiment, soldier, 1763 Cuirassier broadsword, 1760 Carabinier broadsword, soldier, 1763 Broadsword of the Life Guards Cavalry Regiment, second half of the 1790s Dragoon broadsword, soldier and officer, 1798 Broadsword army cuirassier, soldier and officer, 1798 Cavalie Guards broadsword, 1799 Cavalier Guards broadsword (for wearing with a vice-uniform), 1799 Cavalier Guards broadsword, 1802 Horse artillery broadsword, for lower ranks, 1803 Dragoon broadsword, soldier and officer, 1806 Broadsword cuirassier, soldier and officer, 1810 Broadsword cuirassier, soldier and officer, 1826 Boarding broadsword, sailor, 1856 I assume that the mistake is that the sword mod. 1806 could be used later than 1809. |
