I just started Napoleonic gaming. Most of the time I game solo, more often these days, or I have one other person to play.

I am looking for a campaign that would work for solo play. Not skirmish level gaming, but closer to Black Powder 2 or Over the Hill level games.

Thanks,

Matthew

There is the Berthier Campaign Manager program. link

I'm working on, and nearly finished with, designing a bot for solo campaigns, which will ideally cover my own needs spanning ancients to WWI.

I am using The Portable Wargame, but borrowed heavily from BP2 for my units, but really any tactical system would work.

If you are interested in working with this bot, to see whether or not it suits you, you can check out my posts at royalistroundhead.blogspot.com

I'm about 90-95% done with the Invader-Bot, where the Player is defending. Once done, I'll begin working on the Defender-Bot, where the player is attacking.

Primarily, I am using, or will be, this for my Imagi-Nations project, but it should plug in to nearly any period. Where I do see it breaking down is WW2 and after, but with some more tinkering, it will perhaps cover that too.

Mostly, I am needing to write the rules from my notes, to explain everything, but virtually all but one small table is finished and now it is fine-tuning.

At least until someone breaks it.

Thank you Mike and Justin, I will take a look. I appreciate the links.

I dont know how long term a campaign you are dreaming of but the two games that spring to mind are:

Avalon Hill's Waterloo which is a brilliant, mini campaign of, you guessed it, the Waterloo campaign. It is challenging enough to satisfy and mercifully short but can be replayed endlessly. It can also be used for any period of gaming and it is easy to play solo. Get a more recent map with wooden blocks copy.

Also, Field Commander Napoleon is designed for solo and has a good AI and lots of maps/scenarios. Just play the battles on tabletop, then return back to the map game.

You must have maps Sire! murat.ca/maps.htm

In these charts, I can recognise there's a certain simplification & distortion of geography, but surely in the one including Ireland the town of Athlone should at the very least be built on either side of the River Shannon? No doubt, with regard to "Game-Play", there's a perfectly sound reason for this (and, I'd assume, other adjustments in other charts), and I'm not just making an adversely critical observation for the sake of it; for long years I've considered, off-and-on, methods of allowing both map-moves and table-top play to be used in Campaigns (Ireland in 1798 being one scenario). I'd be interested to learn from anyone familiar with the particular game, or perhaps game-system, in the link by Mike Petro above (I do have the Avalon Hill "Waterloo", by the way, only with little cardboard squares for counters).
Good Luck.

Is there a full list somewhere for rules about Napoleonic Campaigns / campaign systems ? (ie. not board games)
i know a few but i wonder about the potential full list..

i have made a list for what have been published for the 1812 campaign in the "board wargames universe"..

best regards

Piquet also does a set of campaign rules called "Theater of War" that encourages homemade and, one would think, simple, maps and also makes sure that no matter what, you only use the forces each side possesses in their collections and never requires that you need more.

Piquet 3 came with a new campaign system for free IIRC.

Matthew,

Sounds like you need to take a look at the Carnage and Glory campaign system, which compliments the tactical rules system.CG has just released a new ACW campaign system and updated their Napoleonic/SYW/AWI system. The campaign systems are fully integrated with the tactical systems and can be played solo, making the usual accommodations for solo play. The campaign system included provisions for supply, attrition, partisan activity, etc. CG also has a full compliment of maps to be used with the campaign system, covering Spain, Central Europe and Russia for Napoleonic's. Link below.

The C&G rules look nice, but they are for 3 people and I am looking for solo or two players.

Matthew,

The CG campaign system is designed for 2 players and 1 GM…I have played they solo but of course in order to do so you've got to adopt house rules…

Ironwolf Industries04 Mar 2021 6:23 a.m. PST

For CG campaign, it's a max of three
Players? GM & two player's?

For a totally different approach, have a look at this idea for running a campaign using the Snakes & Ladders mechanism:

The snakes and ladders is interesting. I have not been able to understand exactly how it works, but I think I get the high level concept. This is more along the lines I am looking for. Everyone keeps offering up two players and a GM type campaign, but none of that works for solo players.
