"À son arrivé dans son unité, le soldat reçoit un équipement complet (uniforme et arme) dont il est responsable. Tant qu'il sera militaire, il devra en garantir la plus grande propreté et pour son arme le parfait fonctionnement. En garnison comme en campagne, l'entretien de ces effets occupe une grande part du temps du soldat. Selon les règlements, le paquetage complet du fantassin napoléonien doit peser environ 20 kg, mais dans les faits les soldats emmènent toujours plus de choses et transportent jusqu'à 30 kg sur les routes d'Europe…"

I cannot imagine wearing such footwear for hundreds of kilometers on poor feet!
