"On 4 June 1944, a U.S. Navy hunter-killer group organized around USS Guadalcanal (CVE-60) captured the German Type IXC submarine U-505. This was the first time that the U.S. Navy had captured an enemy vessel at sea since the 19th century.

The Navy task group was commanded by Captain Daniel V. Gallery, USN, of Guadalcanal, and was comprised of the escort carrier and five destroyer escorts: Pillsbury (DE-133), Pope (DE-134), Flaherty (DE-135), Chatelain (DE-149), and Jenks (DE-665)…"

If you get a chance to get to Chicago, you have to see the U-505, it's an amazing tour. Currently the museum is closed and they are doing virtual tours.
For more information on the German U-boats, the best site is this one: uboat.net

I grew up in the Chicago area and lost count of how many hours I spent in the U505. After I was married, I returned with the wife and took her on board. The tour was given by a disinterested teenaged nitwit and we dropped back and I began explaining details the nitwit had omitted. All of a sudden, the rest of the tour was there and I was a bit embarrassed. "Please continue " someone said, so I took over the tour and did it right. The museum guide was not pleased, and if looks could kill . . .
The people enjoyed it and my new wife was even impressed!

Loved the picture of someone holding up a sign "Submarine Crossing" on Lake Shore Drive in the middle of the night.

I got to see the U-505 in Spring 2019 while in Chicago. My family was very impressed by it and I thought the tour guide did a good job. Definitely worth a visit.
