I am creating a British Churchill tank unit for North-West Europe from June 1944 through the end of the war in Europe in 1945. What British armor formations had the Churchill (other than the Crocodile) during that time frame? I have found the 6th Guards Armor Brigade but what other formations had that tank during that time frame? Thank you |

In general, any unit designated as "tank" has Churchills. "Armored" units have Sherman's or Cromwells. Your example was actually the 6th (Guards) Tank Brigade. Others were the 31st and 34th Tank Brigades. These were separate brigades that were attached to infantry divisions on an "as-needed" basis. |

As noted, Independant Tank Brigades. There were only three of them (31st, 34th and 6th Guards). Various regiments were swapped between the brigades during the campaign. There were also independent Armoured Brigades, equipped with Shermans. |

The slow units During the pursuit phase lots of Units were grounded whilst their transport was used to move the others. The tank transporters were used by the Armoured Division and the Churchills were 'left behind' as a result. It had nothing to do with 'speed' and once they were uplifted they continued to play an important role in the final campaigns. |

31st Tank Brigade had its units posted away post Normandy, and joined 79th Armd Div as a HQ for various specialised units (APCs, LVTs initially) before becoming a de-facto flamethrower Brigade by the time of the Rhine crossing, with three Crocodile equipped Regts. Gary |
