"In a turn of events that will surprise exactly no one at this point, a large swath of the United States is currently experiencing an extreme and unprecedented weather event. A record cold snap has borne down upon some 25 states, paralyzing parts of the central and southern U.S. that just aren't used to getting regularly buried by terrifying winter storms in the same way the northeast is. Texas is being pummeled particularly hard: According to poweroutage.us, a utility tracking site, more than 2.8 million of the state's residents were without power as of 1:30 p.m. local time, the result of a surge in power demand as desperate folks scrambled to turn on the heat…."

Lucky they've got the largest reserves of natural gas and oil in the world, ready to provide cheap and reliable energy. Oh, wait… |

I worked in Kansas city Mo and often coastal alaska was warmer than KC most days in the winter. One of the workers that had lived in alaska would bet coworkers until everyone got wise. |

COASTAL Alaska yes. The rest, not so much. My friend sent me a pic of an outdoor temperature sign in his town of Delta Junction that read -74F last week. So, yeah. |

The power companies shortsightedness about this has become a major scandal here in Texas. We have a winter this extreme about every 9-10 years. The power companies were loath to spend the millions necessary to increase output & to winterize the equipment for such a "rare" occurrence, hence a huge amount of damage to property & several deaths related to the cold. |

Quoting From Twitter… cagey ratfish @girlyratfish Jan 30, 2019 "Think of the Jet Stream as a full-support bra for the Polar Vortex. Now think of global warming as a clothes dryer. We dried that bra on "hot" too many times and destroyed all the supportive elastic…. …this is why you get Loose Boobies of Deathly Cold." |

Like I said on other posts, Polar Vortex….just a scarier way of saying "Winter". SpuriousMilius said it, every 8-10 years, yeah, that about right, climate cycles, it gets really cold for a while, then it gets really hot for a while. People's memories are short, thank God mine is still mostly intact. |

Yeah way to go. ERCOT thought… hey let's save a buck and not winterize anything 'cause Texas never gets cold. |

The power companies and execs make more money and increase their stock value by accepting taxpayer "free" government subsidies than actually improving the system. Watch, the Green Dealies are going say Texas needs to buy battery backup systems and the Feds are ready to write the check. I wonder how many Texas farmers and private citizens let the wind turbines on their property in order to collect rent from them? Wolfhag |

von Schwartz, " thank God mine is still mostly intact." For future reference, can you define "mostly"? <snark grin> Wolfhag Well, I do have two adult children, and one of them is female, does that clear it up? The lobotomy didn't help either |
