We've got a mass of polar air stretching through the center of North America, from the Prairie Provinces into northern Mexico. I'm on the edge of it, and the temperature here is about five degrees Fahrenheit (which may or may not work out to -15 degrees Celsius).
Which got me to thinking about Custer's dawn attack on Black Kettle's Indian village along the Washita River in northern Oklahoma (OK, back then, it was Indian Territory) on November 27 1868. It was so cold that, When Custer gave the order to attack, and the band started playing "Garryowen," the regimental song, but the moisture in their breath froze up the instruments before they finished, and the music died.
Not the normal weather for this part of the world, but it does happen from time to time.

Grelber your new to the front range of Colorado, but we can get massive temperature swings. I remember once it was 65 degree fahrenheit and less then 12 hours later it was 0.

My friend lives in Delta Junction Alaska. The temperature there Wednesday was -74 F. I feel lucky to be at only -18 F today.

5F does equal -15C. I haven't been in temperatures that low since I visited New York City a few years ago.

I don't miss them. I'm happy that all I need for cold February mornings around here is a light jacket. The coldest I've seen this month has been 48F, according to my car's display. Usually it's mid-50s at 7:30 am.

It was 7F(-14C) when I called my brother in South Carolina and it was 49F(10C). I sort of wish I was a snow bird.

Poor you, we in north England just had a 'cold snap' which meant +2C during the day an a couple of inches of snow, going down to -6C at night.

Long live the Gulf Stream!

We have truly variable weather from October to March here in the DFW Metroplex. Our Christmas lunch at my inlaws has been eaten on the patio by their pool often, while other Decembers have been freezing with ice &/or snow. When I took my kids Trick or Treating we might need overcoats or their costumes would be more than warm enough. The last few Octobers have even been balmy. This week snow is predicted with highs in the 20's, & a horrendous deadly multi-car traffic accident with 6 fatalities occurred Thursday in Ft. Worth due to ice on a highway that wasn't pretreated to prevent just such a calamity. Here 30 miles East, my neighbors were walking & doing yard work in T-shirts & shorts. As the adage goes: "If you don't like the weather in NE Texas be patient, it will soon change".

@etotheipi
Yeah, it's never seriously cold here …

Where's your facial hair?

Everyone's kvetching about how cold is is, although I now reside in the relative warmth of Central Florida I originally hail from the frozen tundra of Minnesota. Discovered by a band of wandering Swedes seeking to escape the searing heat of Wisconsin winters.
Sitting out there in the middle of the prairie, colder than a well digger's arse.
It's the Polar Vortex, that's what we used to call…Winter. Of course, Polar Vortex sounds so much more sinister, kinda like an old episode of Star Trek, y'know the original with Bill Shatner.

In sunny southern Manitoba it was -36 C (-33 F) this morning and we've been promised the same for tonight.

Augustus13 Feb 2021 2:28 p.m. PST

Whether the weather is cold
Or whether the weather is hot
We'll weather the weather
Whatever the weather
Whether we like it or not

Bashytubits13 Feb 2021 3:40 p.m. PST

I hate the cold weather, whether to say the least,
the cold weather hates me, I slipped and fell last week,
plus the warm weather's better, I'd rather sweat than freeze,
put the ice in my drinks not in my socks and sleeves,
the reason I feel this way, stems from two things,
maybe I'm a fall guy, with wants to see some leaves,
or I just miss the summer days with vitamin ray beams,
either reason or way my thoughts remain oblique,
because I hate the cold weather and cold weather hates me.

No one else remembers Jimmy Stewart in The Rare Breed? They've lost the first shorthorn in Texas in a blizzard, and Stewart is asking the vaqueros where he might have gone.

"If he's as smart as you say, Senor, he's half way to Mexico by now."

And here in God's country (northern Indiana) there's a foot or so of snow on the ground, it hasn't been above freezing in about two weeks and won't be for another one. The NWS says we'll hit a high of 34 Fahrenheit a week from tomorrow, at which point it will snow again. Twice.

Post something again in July, and I'll complain about the heat.

Perris070713 Feb 2021 8:25 p.m. PST

Northern Indiana is "down south" to me…

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP14 Feb 2021 10:36 a.m. PST

Well, Perris, at least you're on the Little Wars side of Chicago. Every year I tell myself how much shorter the trip to Little Wars would be than the trip to Lancaster, Gettysburg or Valley Forge. And every year I contemplate navigating Chicago and head east again.

von Schwartz ver 214 Feb 2021 11:11 a.m. PST

Drove through Chicago metro to take my son to college in Philly, the first and last time I did that!! From then on, if any trip took near anywhere near Chicago, I would make sure to detour South of the city even if it took longer.

So true bashytubits ! The one good thing about the cold is no bugs ! E.g. the ROK in the summer with all those rice paddies was bug heaven ! 🦟 But their very cold fridge winters … sans bugs !

Of course you could get frostbite, etc.🥶 if you were not careful … But hey ! No bugs !!!!

mad monkey 114 Feb 2021 3:54 p.m. PST

Rainy but warm in Florida. Might hit the 80's this week.

Von Schwartz, northern Indiana, like Ohio, was settled by German refugees desperate to maintain the tradition of going months without seeing a blue sky. Evidently the mosquito (the Indiana state bird) was considered an acceptable price to pay.

And we, at least, will never slide into the Pacific.

(Oddly my computer thinks it's living in California. Pretty much every morning the weather on Yahoo home page has reset to BTVS territory.)
