…Millions Of Years Ago

"If there was a highly advanced ancient civilization present on Earth long before the appearance of modern humans would even know it?

We tend to assume Homo sapiens is the only species ever to have developed advanced technology, but scientists say it is possible very sophisticated, non-human civilizations may have existed on our planet millions of years ago!

The problem is to find traces of these unknown beings. While this may not be possible, or extremely difficult, we cannot dismiss the possibility our planet was inhabited long before Homo sapiens emerged…"

If so, why didn't they leave any traces of mining or exploiting the materials?

Yeah, but did they have McDonalds? No? Not so advanced, I guess.

How long would such traces last? It's possible that natural forces have erased them completely.

If they had a serious war, we should find some sort of radioactive evidence, like a layer of fallout.

Wasn't the dinosaur civilisation wiped out by an orbital kinetic weapon bombardment? I thought we had evidence for this?

They probably had Starbucks, though. Those are everywhere.

Maybe they were destroyed by techno-oligarchs and their own self-loathing.

Oberlindes Sol LIC, you've hit it on the head. Given sufficient time, most technology we have ( With the exception of polyflurocarbons and similar chemicals, and radioactives such as those at the Oklo nuclear reactor in Africa 2 billion years ago) will vanish utterly, due to the natural processes of climate, erosion, earth movements, vulcanism, sea changes, the whole gamut of natural processes. The oldest civilization we could hope to detect would have to be less than 200 thousand years old.

Even then, there'd be people who'd argue the toss; Heck, there's those who claim Neanderthals never made flutes, and say all those bones with rows on holes in them are from insect damage. ( link discusses the bruhaha )
