The more I read about the 1919 – 1921 Irish conflict, the more the fighting reminds me of western gunfights or gangster gang shootouts, with groups of 12 or less shooting it out in a matter of minutes. I was considering using the interwar Setting the East Ablaze rules, but now I am considering Fistful of Lead or a set of Prohibition gangster rules. What rules are other folks using?

I used Two Hour Wargames "Chain Reaction" for my Irish skirmishes. The rules are designed specifically for this type of game; a figure is a character armed as shown with a few stats & attributes. For my convention games I had 3 players on each side with 5 or 6 minis apiece. I also ran Prohibition Era games with 2 opposing gangs & a couple of Revenuer players.

We used a modified version of GASLIGHT.

We've also used Western Gunfight rules as well.

There's a set of rules I snagged off the 'net for the Irish Civil War called "Like Cricket, But With Guns." I haven't actually played them (because I haven't finished painting my figures, sigh) They are pretty simple, but quick. I also have "Flying Lead" by Ganesha Games. I really like their system and I've played other Ganesha rules that are updated for each different era.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I love the title: "Like Cricket, But With Guns", but I can't find it online. I will try Chain Reaction and I think I have a copy of GASLIGHT stashed in my garage.

I used "It Came from beyond the Still" once. (Did you know that a Lewis gun can take down a small scout flying saucer? Now you do! It didn't mean that the IRA and the Black and Tans became permanent friends, but in this one incident they found common ground. And my politician lawyer friend shot the Gentleman from the Times. I think he was role playing.)

Basically, any true skirmish game will work.

Nick, I've used Pulp Alley, Flying Lead and the Disposable Heroes Irish Civil War variant from the old Iron Ivan Yahoo Group.

Like Cricket, but with Guns found on freewargamesrules site, under WW2 category. Appears to be a VBCW game.
