I have been contemplating getting back into WW II again after quite a long hiatus. I am looking for a good and simple rule set for platoon to company size engagements, 15MM, and I would like to know where I can get some early war German and British, armour and infantry. With the way things are going I would like to know about rules that could be used solo as I am currently wandering through the vast wargaming desert of North Central Florida. I know a little about FoW (platoon and company level?) and Bolt Action (squad level). I used to use a set called Angriff but my copy has since gone AWOL.

This Video provided an overview of a number of platoon level sets of rules. Some of the rules are free. The state of the art is probably Spearhead, but that is 6mm focus. Rapid Fire, Kampfgruppen Commander or Combat HQ may be a better option for 15mm. For a solo game I am uncertain what the best rules are, I would suggest trying some of the free download rules first to see how a solo game goes, but most figure-gaming rules are so-so for solo. I play test games on a regular basis, but that is to learn the rules or to test a set of modifications, or test a new set of rules only.

Note, I am assuming you mean 1 element is a platoon, if you wish to command a platoon you need skirmish rules. This Video‌ shows you skirmish rules. I suspect Chain of Command may be the best option, but at this scale solo becomes more difficult.

Nuts! by TwoHourWargames
Check out the free version here and see if you like the system: link

Forum here: twohourwargames.proboards.com
Ask questions, get answers; Ed (the author) usually responds withing 24 hours (usually).

And a blog where you can find some battle reports and how-to's: 2hourblog.blogspot.com

You'll have to start with a squad or so, learn the system and move up to a platoon.

Caveat: I'm a fanboy, you've been warned.

Take a look at Peter Pig's PBI …

The 'army' is a company, the 'units' are platoons (the stands are parts of a section: a section is usually represented by e.g. 3 bases, with 8 figures spread over them) …

More on PBI from the Peter Pig website

@pfmodel. Obviously von Schwartz is referring to a 1:1 ruleset, playing a platoon as his game army.

I would recommend Chain of Command, if you want single based miniatures. If you want bigger bases i like Crossfire. Crossfire is 1:2, i.e. a base of 3-5 models is a section of around 10 men. You play a company.

For bigger bases in 15mm i would say, use the official Flames of War bases. You can play everything with them.

I too love Nuts! but playing a company sized game is beyond its reach.

Crossfire is a very good game if you want to focus on infantry. The armor rules are very minimal (though they do work).

Battlegroup might also be worth a look. I wrote a summary of them here:

They now have a "rules only" booklet as well.

Another game you might consider is Mein Panzer:

This is a full listing of peter's rule book videos. Parts 1A and 1B cover rules for platoon to company level games.

Five core company command

This works very well solo as well as head to head.
It's also prettty easy to learn, always a plus.

Good suggestions all, but maybe I was too vague. I was thinking more of like 1 or 2 troops of armor, 1 or 2 platoons of infantry, some arty, and maybe some recon'

so. 4-6 tanks or 3-8 squads if infantry. Chain of Command is worth a look

Battlegroup is awesome for this. I play 15mm. Troops are individually based and units are composed of individual vehicles, guns, or squads. A game can be as small as a couple of squads up to a battalion or more.

The game feels more 'realistic' than FOW and combined arms tactics are really important. There is a command and control system that is really nice. The battle rating system (think moral) is fun too and leads to unexpected events. There is an active group on facebook with 5,000+ members where the two main designers answer questions and talk shop.

I should add that it is published by Plastic Soldier Company

For solo gamming, I really like all the rules from Ivan who is Nordic Weasel Games. He's got mostly skirmish rules that cover every genre; sci-fi, fantasy, WWII, WWI, black powder, etc.

Five Men at Kursk is the WWII solo game

Anyone here actually play Mein Panzer? I wish there was a video of how to play it.

Some very interesting ideas and suggestions, I will need to do a little due diligence and some research.

Hey, is Peter Pig 20mm or 15mm? I know they are UK thing but I am trying to figure out where to find some tank, gun, and vehicle crews, 15mm. I figure I can get all the infantry I need in 15s from FoW but there are a few odds and ends and I like to customize my units a little if possible.

pfmodel06 Feb 2021 12:07 a.m. PST

I am only familiar with 15mm Peter pig figures, they are highly regarded. peterpig.co.uk

Wow!!! The variety is great and they appear to be very nicely done. Also, you get crews with many and can purchase extra crew figures, woohoo! My next question is…are there any distributors here in the US, also, are they compatible, size wise, with Gaming Models 15s?
