"Look closely at some of the biggest naval vessels coming out of Chinese shipyards and you might notice something unusual. Where many of the world's warships and coast guard vessels have hulls with roundly sloping sides, the Chinese navy's new Type 055 cruisers and the Chinese coast guard's patrol ship Haixun both feature slab-like flat portions along their hulls. Those flat sides aren't an aesthetic choice, according to Jerry Hendrix, an American naval expert and author of the new book To Provide and Maintain a Navy…"

Two can play at that "game", AND blowing an aggressor out of the water isn't off the table either. |

Wipe out the threat at long range before it can ram you. No magic there … |

Those "coast guard" vessels are more for bullying ships of smaller SE Asian countries and taking their fishing grounds. |

People actually think they're meant to play "bumper boats" with armed naval vessels? |

People actually think they're meant to play "bumper boats" with armed naval vessels? If so … they'd only do it … once … |

Why wouldn't they do it? I doubt any ship, even USN, will fire first and probably not after they're rammed. They managed to force down a patrol plane and we didn't do much. All they have to do is show the USN won't defend themselves and it shows any potential minor allies of the US that they're on their own. Even if it's once, it's worth the chance. And if it works, do it again. |

It's as Greg states. They want to intimidate Vietnam and the Philippines or anyone that they want to steal waters and lands from. |

"Bumper boats" happens ALL the time with both the Chinese and Russians, so I suspect you're being sarcastic there, eh? Soviets played that game repeatedly in the Cold War with US/NATO forces, especially in the Mediterranean. Chinese do even today, and usually their "playmates" are poor fishing boat captains whose vessels frequently end up on the bottom of the sea, and their crews either dead or captured. They'll do it with the USN since they can, they'll blame us for the incident(s), and they'll be happy about it since they've got more vessels than we do and can afford to lose these cheap ones for each of our very expensive, irreplaceable ones. Chi-com Naval Tactics 101. The USN won't fire first, before being bumped/rammed, due to tight naval engagement rules, and the new guy in charge. |

The new guy in charge will not push China's buttons like the one who just left in a huff. He'll treat China like how the last one handled Russia. |

Bumper boats is one thing, but ramming as an actual naval tactic in the 21st century? Are they issuing their crews cutlasses and handspikes, too? Any ship trying to ram another would be sunk while still over the horizon by a Harpoon or Exocet. |

Javelin, the coast guard vessel is not a warship. It's a coast guard/paramilitary vessel. If there is any truth to this article, the targets are other countries' fishing boats. As for Type 055 it packs 112 VLS with a variety of missiles, torpedo tubes, 1 130mm gun and 2 helicopters. Even smaller Chinese ships pack more firepower than average American/Australian/Japanese ones. And the new Constellation class frigates won't be much more capable. The Chinese have figured out that the US and friends are largely gutless and won't respond with force.
Remember how the Norks sunk a South Korean warship and neither America nor South Korea did anything? Chinese learned from this and other provocations – the democratic west is too gutless. |

the democratic west is too gutless. I don't think we will be going to a shoot'n war with the PRC/CCP anytime soon. And I really don't know the current or future status of any sanctions, etc. |

So many think 'FIRPOWER!' …which is NOT the GAME… at present. 'Bumper Boats' IS. IF the Chinese ARE building vessels capable of withstanding collision …intentional or not… for the purpose of nautical 'argy bargy', well, they have more sense than 'Western' procurement of HUGELY expensive 'weapons systems' which can BARELY SURVIVE any damage, never mind 'Function'. (Look at some of the damage on 1940's Destroyers… the ones who were able to return to be photographed, anyway. Of course things are very different now, but… ). I rather think, that if a USN or RN commander put his vessel 'In Harm's Way', to protect someone else's fishing boats… with the result of a crippled ship, or, 'SHOCK HORROR!', casualties! … That would be career finish. And, IF, he used a GUN… Either, it would start a 'Shootin' War'…with possibly unimaginable effects… apart from his instant elevation to 'HERO' for political reasons… and anathema, thereafter… Or, He would be publicly castrated…and so would his crew if they 'Just Followed Orders' as they should do… but with years of 'Legal Harassment' for the rest of their lives. We live in a very twisted World, now. If the Chinese are building 'Bumper Boats'… build better ones, or up-armour something as a counter… but do not think hi-tech weaponry is the automatic answer to 'low tech 'Bullying'… Chinese Ain't Stupid… WE ARE! |

And, although I have never been schooled in 'unarmed combat' of any sort, I rather gather that there are TWO ways to win. One is to 'Go In Hard' with everythng you've got. The other, from a 'weaker' stance, is to 'goad' and 'provoke' action… and USE THAT ACTION to your advantage? Might that fit with Chinese thinking? |

The other, from a 'weaker' stance, is to 'goad' and 'provoke' action… and USE THAT ACTION to your advantage? Nail hit on head. Goal for Chinese/Russians/Iranians is to push as far as they can without provoking a serious response. And given western democracies increasingly weak willpower and obsession with economics, it gives the nasty countries a lot of room to manoeuvre without the west doing anything. As stated previously the Norks sunk a South Korean corvette several years ago and killed near 50 South Korean sailors and basically got away with it. It means the Chicoms or Russians could probably ram a few western warships and get away with it scot free.
