I. When playing with friends? A. Always B. Often C. Occasionally D. Rarely E. Never II. When playing with strangers or in public games, like at cons and game stores? A. Always B. Often C. Occasionally D. Rarely E. Never ----------------- I. For me would be D rarely. II. For me, E. never |

I wonder if our nation's forefathers talked politics while gaming? They probably did, and had some wild arguments which eventually lead to the American Revolution. Thank God for their bravery. |

A & doesn't apply. Not surprisingly, American politics. We're all agreed, like sensible people, on our stance so discussions were all along the nature of wonderment & bewilderment. |

I prefer discussing politics with people I disagree with. If I already agree with them, then I already know what they are going to say. The problem is that most people don't discuss, they try to argue and it never occurs to them to even consider another point of view. |

The problem is that most people don't discuss, they try to argue and it never occurs to them to even consider another point of view. Well, a sizeable minority (under 40%, I believe). I think the concept of calming down uncivil wars is laudable. |
dBerczerk | 21 Jan 2021 5:50 p.m. PST |
I almost never bring up politics in either setting, but when someone insists on demonstrating their ignorance and lack of civility in a public setting, I find it difficult to refrain from pushing back. |

When you say "discuss politics" which do you mean: 1. Candidate X is a raving Y 2. Economic system X is better because Y 3. The core foundation of nation X is Y Discussing candidates leads to madness, discussing ideas leads to wisdom. At least in my humble opinion, which is worth every penny you paid for it. |

4. Regurgitate the talking points you heard from the msm. (p.s., the most effective form of brainwashing is repetition.) |

With my gaming group (sadly dispersed by deaths & relocations) my problem as a GM was to keep the game moving. My friends were all intelligent, educated, well-read, had interesting life experiences & were willing to discuss any subject with good humor. However, a couple of them would rather converse than focus on the game & making their moves in a timely manner (which was especially annoying when they did so during my game at a convention). I greatly enjoyed our discussions but I wanted to save them for during our meal & the later drinking & smoking on my patio. |

I. F – If I talk politics, they are no longer friends by the end of my first sentence. II. F – If I'm losing. It's a good way to get them to forfeit by leaving the table. . |

1-A We are all conservative in our politics. So we all pretty much agree with each other 2- F If I played with people I didn't know I would not discuss politics. However it's not an issue as I have only played with the same gaming group for years. |
CeruLucifus | 23 Jan 2021 7:20 p.m. PST |
1-C / 2-E. Most of my games are RPGs now if that matters. The incidence goes up when controversial events affect our own lives. 2 examples: One player is a 1st Grade teacher; when a controversial Secretary of Education was appointed we were curious about his thoughts. And last year with COVID19 distancing his job has hugely changed so we again were curious how he is handling it. |

D, E, which seems to be a popular option. I used to game with a couple guys who are very far from me politically. We could talk politics calmly and politely enough, but we normally shut up about politics during actual games. |
