Tool Bench Hardware Painters Tape

Why do wargamers need painters tape, and is the dollar-store variety good enough?

What is your primary method of backing up your miniature wargaming PDFs, pictures, and other digital media?

abelp0119 Jan 2021 11:11 p.m. PST

I use a 2TB external hard disk. It's 5 years old and I haven't filled half of it yet. Next time it'll be 1TB USB drives.

Also use external hard drive -2 just to be safe!

You might also want a cloud-based reserve backup. Just in case.

USB, I find it hard to justify an external hard drive for the files I need!

External hard drive for bulk stuff (free rules I've downloaded but never played, fluff, etc). And dropbox for the high priority stuff (rules I actually play).

On the laptop, th tablet, a 256Gb USB and External 5TB hard disk. Multiple copies, multiple locations… safety first.

I think we use the Cloud now mainly with all our CADDS models it nor really practical any other way.

I was using usb sticks. I wiped them all to update my files. but before that my hard drive crashed. The computer repair store then lost my drive. So everything is gone. Almost 20 years of collecting and making stuff. 200 gigs of stuff gone forever.
Now its in the cloud, but I don't trust anything. I get as much in hard copy as I can.

I use Google Drive (and have some redundancy with external drives).

whitphoto20 Jan 2021 10:59 a.m. PST

Because of my photography business I already have my main hard drive RAID mirrored and have a backup drive for Mac's Time Machine. In addition the folder that holds all my wargame/RPG files is synced on Dropbox. Hard drives are cheap, I just buy three at a time for my setup when either I think they're getting old or filling up. Currently I have 4 3 terabyte drives.

Another Carbonite customer.

In the last ten or more years, I've needed it twice to save my cookies, and though it takes DAYS to download one's files, they were backed and available.

Nothing on computer, I'm a paper and pen guy. Sadly I've misplaced half of my lists, scenarios, etc. On the other hand, they haven't been corrupted, stolen, or held for ransom!

Hard drives (spinners, as well as Solid State) crash. Best back up options involve multiple formats: hard drives + USB + CD/DVD. Out of all three, CD/DVD is likely the most reliable: no moving parts, data is stored in the opaque coating on top, and unless they become scratched, the data is good for decades longer than most of us will live. If you want the safest option possible, store your back-up's in a safe deposit box, at a bank: hard disk drives will fit, as well as USB drives, and CD/DVD disks.

I have hundreds of PDF files for gaming, mostly RPG stuff. I have back-up CD's and DVD's which date back to 2006, and earlier. Still good, still readable. I've had to use them on more than one desktop PC/laptop replacement. Plastic CD's and DVD's are still the same interface.

Hard drives have changed interfaces, several times over the past 20 years. I have old hard drives I can no longer connect to a PC, even though they still spin up… The USB interface has gone through three major revisions: Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3/C is the current flavor. SD cards, 3+ versions, anyone? Cheers!

My wife. She does all the backups.
