Greetings! I'm looking for reading on battles between the Italian States, particularly during the latter half of the 14th Century. The only book I have from that period so far is the Osprey book on Castagnaro. Thanks for any input! |

One of the older biographies of Hawkwood link I do have a more modern one, but I have yet to read it. The older ones tend to go into more details about battles though of course the reader has to be careful about inaccuracies and attitudes of the time. I don't know about this particular book, but older histories are more likely to include things like heraldry. |

Can I recommend Hawkwood (subtitled: Diabolical Englishman) by Frances Stonor Saunders? Faber and Faber 2004. ISBN 0 – 571 – 21908 – X It is a very readable introduction to the period and the person. I have a copy and read it often. Review here: link In the US it was published as The Devil's Broker Barry |

Mercenaries and Their Masters is a good read on the whole period I will second this recommendation. Maybe not that great for information about individual battles, but provides a fair bit of background information about the foreign Great Companies that roamed the peninsula during the late 14th century. |
