"In recent weeks, tensions in the Middle East appeared ready to spill over into a larger conflict.

The U.S. turned around an aircraft carrier strike group that was supposed to be heading home and American B-52s transited over Israel in a mission that served as a warning to Tehran. This comes after a mid-December report that an Israeli submarine might be heading towards the Persian Gulf and Iranian warnings of provocations in Iraq.

Could a conflict erupt before President Donald Trump leaves office?…"

Could be.

Perhaps any time now.

The change in US leadership might see a change in US policy and embolden Iran,

Tally Ho!

I'm sure that everything will be fine in 2021.

What could possibly go wrong? A bright new future awaits.

Wackmole908 Jan 2021 7:56 a.m. PST

New yes bright well not for very long.

Stryderg08 Jan 2021 8:39 a.m. PST

Bright in the sense of "blinding – so no one can see", that might fit the phrase.

For anyone to go to war, I would think that they need to believe they can accomplish their goals and the risk/reward ratio is in their favor. That calculation happens in their minds, not in world opinion.

The IDF will most likely not go to war with Iran, in 2021. Even with the new admin coming in shortly. The Mossad, etc. is doing a pretty good job, doing cyber attacks on the Iranians' computers that they are using to help them making deployable nucs. As well as killing their nuke scientists, blowing up structures, etc., that house and support them making nukes.

The USA sending B-52s and a CVN Task Force, etc.. in the region is a bit of sabre rattling/show of force. But those assets are prepared to go hot at a moments notice. The Iranians know that.

They are saying they will get revenge on the US for killing Suilimani. That may be posturing for their own population and other Shia in Iraq, etc. They know if they do anything "stupid" now. The response may make the "happy".

Now again the new leadership in coming to DC in a couple of weeks. May change all this, by trying to modify the Nuke Deal, that the current admin, withdrew from, a few years back.

My stance stays the same, a theocracy like Iran should not get nukes.

I suspect US prez will try to reinstate rhe Iranian deal, assuming he is not busy fighting ACW 2.

Thresher0108 Jan 2021 8:58 p.m. PST

Yep, Iran WILL definitely be emboldened, sadly.

There's a real reason Sec. Gates said the guy got "virtually every international decision wrong" when they worked together.

If he'd gotten his way, Bin Laden would still be alive and kicking, and plotting to kill Americans and other Westerners.

Funny how the Ayatollahs in Iran can use Twitter to call for violence against Israel and America without having their accounts blocked. You could make a case that the people running Twitter are scumbags.

Sad but true … Even if he/she is busy they will still find time to directly or indirectly let a fundamentalist theocracy get deployable nukes. Then a usual when something bad happens, their will be "wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth. With wailing, "How horrible ! How could this happen ?" … etc., etc. Will be little comfort for the dead and dying though.

USAF +1 Yep, the doubt standards are everywhere …

I have noticed that too USAFp, and the Chi-coms don't get their posts deleted, or ability to post banned, either.

Just goes to show who those in power favor, over the one they banned.

Sadly, with Iran, apparently they've got a lot of their material to 20% enrichment now, instead of the much lower levels authorized in the "deal".

Real dictators can't be censored.

It is the people who are doing the censoring who are the dictators,

Yes, Iran's Supreme Leader gets away with saying "Death to the USA", etc., etc., or similar. But he gets a pass, as is similar with the PRC/CCP.

But if the Left running those sites does blocks Iran or the PRC's leadership from saying anything heinous, etc. Then they would be considered racists, bigots, xenophobes, etc.,.

Strange world we live in …
