Now As I got a 3D printer last year and I acquired some STL files for smoke effects like missile exhaust , explosions etc from Deadly Print Studio I tried there smoke marker STL . I modified the file a bit to get different sizes of smoke . Then I printed them out based them in the usual way and added a little smoke grenade. Here are the results:

Both are great. Hard to compare, but purple will always look better anyway….more like smoke. At high magnification, real close up, I vote for the printed purple over the sponge orange. Of the two above, I favour the lower image, with smoke directly rising 9although twice as high is even better. Not sure the horizontal ground drift looks right (unless of course chopper blades nearby! Great effect |

I like them both, but I think the vertical purple looks more "billowy" than the orange smoke. |

Looks great !!!! "Popped Smoke" a number of times back in '79-'90 ! And yes deadhead is right, if the chopper is on or nearing the ground depending on the distance the smoke will quickly dissipate. But you also use smoke to mark Drops Zones for cargo and/or troops. It is important to pop smoke so the paratroops, cargo or even just landing a bird. Can see which way the wind is blowing. Along with wind speed. And make adjustments accordingly. The wind many times comes in layers. The wind speed above the DZ/LZ may be different then the conditions on the DZ/LZ. |

Trying to land between tall trees in a narrow clearing, while the locals are trying to blow you away, I think I would need to inhale a lot of that purple smoke (or some such) to even attempt that. Much respect. |

Yeah … The US Military had to somewhat learn the hard way again … Forced Entry Ops can be costly. So don't do'm ! When I was with the 101, '80-'83, I don't remember training much on landing or extracting at/from a Hot LZ. Going in you may try to use "Stealth" but Choppers make a lot of noise. So you may have to use firepower from all assets available. E.g. Gunships, FA, CAS & Naval Fire Support … Going in or out … |
