Last Sunday.

I moved the shelves around a bit earlier in the year, and they are a bit tight, so you have to take the bottom RUB at the same time as the top one. I didn't realise it was more than half out when I removed the top one, and not being non-metallic figures I didn't spot the shift in weight.

Luckily very little damage – they are the Little Wooden Men, so paint didn't chip, and my theory seems to be correct; they are so light they don't hurt other bases if they get chucked around. Broke one gun, but the crew stayed, and a few other singleton/double figures came off, but easily glueable. Only 1 or 2 flags as well, so that was good. A couple of the skirmisher muskets are broken, but hanging on in a shoot round corners way, and one general appears to be 'Nearly Headless Nick'. You all know how wood doesn't snap cleanly, and the thin slither is keeping bits together. Because they are semi-flats, they didn't tangle.

The oddest bit was the single figure that was part of a strip – it was the STRIP that broke, not the legs, despite it being glued down! Not sure how that happened.

The most relief was finding I hadn't lost 1 lance on the 36 Uhlans!

However – do you know how to tell the difference between French and Austrian Hussars at 1:200? No, neither do I!

Let's just say good-bye to this year already.

If it had been me I would not needed to have posted this. I would have turn the air in most of N. America blue. Gladit was a near miss. H

Ferd, there may have been a word derived from the High German "to prick or to poke" expelled. The biggest pain (after picking them up) is sorting them out. At the moment they are just by type in the box – German/Hungarian/Ligne/Legere etc in the box. I will sort out units at some point. (luckily I've been playing Blucher, so it doesn't really matter if they are a little mixed)

Last Hussar,
Little wooden men?

cmdr kevin30 Dec 2020 6:15 p.m. PST

Beats the Bleeped text out of have to box everything up and put it in storage and live in a hotel. My house I rented got sold and the new owners want to occupy it.

There is a testament to the sturdiness of those little wooden men!

Several years ago, I experienced a similar accident with a box of my "favorite" 28mm skirmish figures. For no reason it just slipped out of my hands and crashed onto the floor, damaging most everything. On top of it all,it had been a rough patch in my life, with my parents and a few friends all dying within months of each other. I felt I was living at cemeteries. I literally dropped to the floor and started bawling. Everything caught up to me at that moment.

Fortunately, several months later I was able to return to the box and repair/touch up the figures. They actually looked better than before the plunge. Just typing this still makes me shake and upset my stomach.

BTW jabbadabbadan, I'm with you on this one! Good riddance 2020!

Kevin – I feel your pain. For 2 years I rented a garage as the only place to store virtually everything I owned while I lodged with a work colleague. One of the reasons I am scared my Landlord will sell my flat.

Nnascati
"Sort of" flats – actually laser cut from 2mm plywood

Because of how obvious they are, I've gone with a 'Billiard Table' look, as in "a game played by gentlemen after dinner, over port and cigars". The dice frames are custom cut by pendraken.co.uk for 7mm dice as Blucher Elan markers, as are the trays (and very reasonable they were too).

They are better than my painting does justice to. Available from commission-figurines.co.uk
£2.00 GBP for 12 strips of 8 Infantry, or 12x 3 cavalry. The Uhlans were a bit of a nightmare – after painting I had to cut coloured paper into 1.5mm squares, and glue them at 45' angles onto the heads of cavalry that had their plumes clipped off. Then make tiny pennants and wrap them round clipped broom bristles as lances, before gluing them on.

To be fair – bog standard figures are really quick to paint.

Those are very interesting.

I feel your pain, and your relief that it wasn't worse.

Not that long ago, I was about to paint a set of three 25mm science fiction adventurers. I opened the blister pack, and one fell out, bounced off the table, off my leg, and onto the floor. I carefully got up to look for it on the ground -- and found that I had stepped on it and when I stood up. The long dagger was snapped clean off, but I had been thinking of converting it to flashlight, so I guess it could have been worse.

Sorry to hear, Kevin. They are not always an adequate substitute, but do consider that 5mm can live in a suitcase, and 2mm in a laptop carrier. They can keep you going until better times.
